Tips on good tutorials for stylized terrains

I am working on a game that will have a stylized graphic style. I will be using an edge detection post processor for outlining and will hand paint the textures.

I am looking for tutorials on how to create stylized terrains and the assets to use as grass and trees. There are a lot out of there explaining how create realistic assets, and how it technically should work. But some guidance on design would be helpful.

Does anyone know of video’s and written tutorials?

Do you have tips yourself you can share?

I think it’s best to google for stylized terrains and then find content that suits your style needs and start to logically deconstruct how it’s made.

Some tutorials have been also made about the topic, but I’m not sure if they are that useful. It’s better to try first understand the underlying principles what makes something look good and then work out the methods and processes needed to get the result.

Pinterest might be also a good place to take a look at, there’s numerous collections there usually if you need to look for something. So I’m sure there’s collections of stylized rocks, terrains and so on.

And most importantly, take out your modeling or drawing app or just a plain old notebook and start sketching! It usually takes quite a few failures until you find out what works and what doesn’t.

Definitely check out low-poly style packs at the Unity Asset Store, try creating some worlds with them. Also with trees you can try toon shaders and try twisting the roots up for example.

Personally, I’ve always been doing low-poly and low-res textures so I’ve had to really give a lot of thought how I can translate realistic scenes and stylize them so that there’s this impressionistic version of real life. You find yourself using techniques that are very rare, it’s pretty fun stuff.
