Tips on participating on Indie-Events

Hey there fellow devs!

I’m working with my girlfriend (the artist) on a game for some time and we will soon start to promote our game via SocialMedia. But we would also like to get into the “scene” by attending on different (Indie)Events like PAX, IndieCade, GDC, IGF and so on. We are from Europe/Germany and I would like to know how some of you are managing this. Our main problem is, well, yeah: the money. I have got two other part-time jobs and she is “just” a student, so all the money we got goes into cost of living AND the actual gamedevelopment (middleware/licenses/plugins, webspace and so on). We COULD afford the tickets for these events but of course you have to GET to the actual location and maybe stay there for a while (hotel, hostel etc.), this is a big problem for us. For now I’m trying to save some money in order to get us at least to ONE of these events.

So I hope you guys don’t mind if I ask you for some hints and tips on this

(Sorry for my bad english, I’m not a native speaker!)

It sounds like you are finished or almost finished with your game. Honestly, this may a fairly good use of KickStarter. If you frame it the way you did in your post, and keep the funding request at an amount that is low (but enough to cover the cost of the trip), I can see people getting behind this. Clearly you have already invested time and money into the game, using KickStarter to help you get over that last hurdle is something I would back. Certainly over a group that is just starting and looking for thousands of dollars to get started. Plus, a couple developing a game together is just cool.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply zombiegorilla

Nah, to be honest we are far from being finished, at least speaking about the assets. The basics and the foundation of the game (controls, funcionality) is working and just needs further tweaking and polishing. Now I have to wait for the artists art :stuck_out_tongue:
The idea was to built a (little) community around the game and us early in development (making dev diaries and so on)

We already had the same idea with Kickstarter, but at least with KS it won’t be possible for us. Living in Germany KS doesn’t “allow” that (needing an US or UK bank account and residence, as far as I know)

Did nobody here made any experiences on costs/management for these events?
