My Unity made game Titania was recently released on the iOS app store. Titania started out as a simple experiment. I wanted to take the basic ruleset of a NES era shmup and transfer it to something that could easily be played on the iPhone. In that regard, I think I was successful in retaining the core mechanics of something like Gradius and making it accessible to a wider audience (I used Canabalt as a template for the game’s structure and controls). I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a good artist…but hopefully the procedural color scheme adds some sort of visual flair.
I would really appreciate it if you tried it out (it is free) and left some feedback here.
Thanks.
You should post some screenshots!
I don’t get why you compared it to Canabalt, I thought it was gonna be some sort of endless runner hybrid. I guess you mean in the sense of it being a simple to play game? But it has the basis for a pretty good shooter game. The control works very good but it might benefit from some sort of easing because it feels kind of ‘touchy’ or sensitive.
I had a hard time getting the powerups. Maybe some can be closer. I’m not sure if its randomized. It would be cool if the speed of the stars in the bg increased as you played to give you a sense of progress.
The art is lacking but I think you can make up for it with more creative use of particles and effects. I think the iPhone can handle a lot more than the particles you’re using. For instance, you can at least have parallax going on with the stars in the background. Some stars move slower. Some could be larger, some twinkle. You can look back at even something as simple as Galaga and see they put a lot of details into it.
I like the NES theme you got goin on, with the box art and manual. That’s cool.
Any plans to work on it anymore?
Thanks for playing it.
Yeah, that is what I meant by the Canabalt comparison. The stars actually do increase in speed as the game goes on. I plan on adding more substantial background elements like you mentioned, I’m just not sure what exactly to do (I’ll have a look at some of the things you mentioned). I am going to keep working on it. I sent in version 1.01 yesterday (which just adds support for iOS 4.0) but I have big plans for more substantial updates. Gameplay tweaks come first, but I want to add ship customization and I have some ideas for new modes.
