i released my first Asset some days ago. It´s an plugin that allows you to use youtube inside unity.
I had an financial tough time, just moved to my first own flat and started on getting an driver license. So ive decided to sell a part of my current project. (I started rework on my Cine2GO VR App.) Yesterday i got two mails from the creator of YouTube Video Player, lets see:
Let me first comment on the second mail, to make it already clear that he just trying to get rid of competetition.
Hes saying he took a look at the files. I can proove him wrong. He never had a look at the files/my asset. Where i know it from? Easy! I sold no copy of the asset. Rly, not even one ! Honestly im not proud of it, but that proofs already that he lies.
(was released this july, thinking about an drastic price cut!)
Lets comment on the first mail. Yep ive bought his plugin in intention to save some time on my Cine2GO project. But his plugin didnt fit my needs. It used api v2 back when i decided starting developing my own, also it didnt filtered protected videos which just throwed errors. Support was bad back then and it uses php server side files, which wasnt ideal for obvious reasons. Mine Is completetly written in C#, im not using any of his systems, its all just unity c# compiled in one dll, no php, no server, nothiing! I also had integrated youtube api v3 before he released the update:

Il think it is very clear that he just tried to get rid of competition and insulted me via mail with false acccusations and threat me by contacting unity with those false accusations! Il know its all about the money, but im a bit dissapointed, cant we all just love each other? I know, its all about the money, but shouldnt competition only be about who got the better product? Just like an fair competition is? And just push each other to create even better products for customers? Love y´all, Benny
People will copy your work, pirate your work, try to fraud your work, complain about your work, expect unlimited revisions on your work and regularly devaluate your work.
It’s just something that happens. Best thing you can do is ignore it. Keep focused on the positive things.
Thanks! Yeah, ive expected pirating and devaluating. But claiming its stolen and contacting unity with false accusations was realy unexpected! Youre may right, just ignore those people.
There’s no reason for this thread anyway. Bringing up a private conversation in a public forum with defensive statements does not serve any purpose, unless your asset would have been removed from the store, and then the correct department to contact would be the Unity Asset Store team.
The reason il created this one is, that he should think twice next time. And others too, thats why i posted it, think im not the only one who was threatened by other competitors with contacting unity due falls accusations. Cant changed what happened here, but may prevent some dumb actions in the future with this public discussion.
We all have our little wars to fight. But this is a public forum for asset developers and customers at the same time. You can’t even be sure that he reads your post here and if he does, this will result in a flame war. If you really want to discuss such things, there’s the private Asset Store publisher group on Google Groups, limited to publishers, where we discuss things like piracy, review systems and unfair behavior.
You should have sent him the reply above in the first place and moved on with other stuff.
I am conflicted. Benny could have omitted the name of the person who emailed him to highlight what happened as an issue. But this has become more of a name and shame post.
however also Benny has made this public domain to aid in his defence against the claim against him. Also as its a public forum Kelvin can give his side of the story.
Does make the forums a bit light a soap opera. Buying assets is not just buying code or products its entering a service agreement with the seller and thats a relationship you want to know you can trust.
