If i was 2d painting a game how much longer would top down take than a platformer if the art quality was the same. The game comparisons would be Hyper light drifter vs Hollow knight. But in Hyper light drifter’s case it would be 2d painted instead of pixel art.
There is more work to be done with top down view 2D games. In the 2D platformer you only have one view to draw for your characters and objects. To get the other side of the 2 sides, you only need to flip the drawing. For the isometric view game, you have to draw up, down and at least one of the sides. This has to be done with all of your characters. Not only is there more views to draw, there is that many more frames to draw for animations.
Having said this, there is an isometric view, that is turned at 45 degree angle. This view only needs two view drawings, along with their frames. The adjustent views are flipped from one.
The flipping is only if you are willing to skip that certain level of detail in your game art.
How time crunched are? Do you have a week or two for prototyping? If so, use one week to try and output as much content in one of the styles as possible, then the second week to do the other.
At the end of the two weeks, you’ll have a good idea. I don’t think a more useful answer can be given, because you haven’t told any specifics of your game.
Thanks for the replies!
Prototyping is probably the best answer to this question.
