Total immersion | Playing games while being in them

Brain Computer interfaces are up-and-coming.

I thought the current trend of myo and similar through and came to the conclusion that the end will be brain/brainwave modification to create the feeling of actually being there.

If it existed and no drawbacks on the brain could be proven would you use it? Or do you always need “one foot in reality”?

Do you enjoy having the opportunity to always look away from the screen or would you enjoy actually being in your world you created maybe even for days with some game engine including smell and so on?

I would have no problem plugging directly into a fully immersive game. However, that tech is still several decades away.

I’m not saying it can’t be accomplished in the next 10 to 20 years, but it won’t be approved, let alone cost effective for entertainment for a long long time.

I’ve spent most of my life avoiding reality. But soon my reality will become something I can enjoy.

It’s hard to say how I’ll feel until then.

Scientists just sent one rat’s thoughts through the internet and implanted them in another rat.

Interesting. What do you base your assumptions on?

Elaborate.

Life’s getting not-crappy.

They already have tech (in games) that read your brainwaves and respond accordingly. Feeding information back in, however, is another story altogether. There is some technology that exists, such as cybernetic eye and ear implants that are helping the blind and deaf, but consider the prosthetic industry.

We’ve had the technology to replace damaged limbs for years, but this has only been used for repair, not augmentation. One day, I’m sure, this will change. You’ll be able to get some super cool new arm, or have your legs replaced with faster ones, etc. One day you’ll even be able to replace your eyes, and get thermal or AR enhanced vision.

Even that acceptance of the tech, however, is years away (and we’ve been able to do it for a long time already). Brain augmentation isn’t even perfected yet, and it will remain in the medical and military field for decades before its accepted or cost effective for commercial use.

Heheh, as cool as this will prove to be, I think we in the gaming community should push games like Deus Ex into the culture of masses while it’s still in its infancy.

On the one hand, I can’t wait to jack my brain into the matrix. On the other hand, after dealing with the bugginess, poor security and invasive DRM of today’s major console developers, I’m a little worried about sticking a Sony BrainStation into my skull.

Good to hear that I wasn’t the only one thinking: “Well, plugging into the matrix doesn’t sound half bad”.

Can you link me to an article about that? I would very much like to read it.

These implications are very… unsettling.

Nope. Now we just need to be able to reconstruct DNA, and boom, teleporters :stuck_out_tongue:

The issue with that is: does your awareness also gets sent across? Otherwise you’re just being copied and killed.

If you don’t know does it matter?

I had this discussion with someone at school last week, IMO yes it does matter as it is infact not you and basically it is suicide. An interestoid is that what if we are not us? how would we know, for example if when ever we fall asleep our body is replaced with all new atoms we would not know as we still have the memories.

Would you do it? I sure wouldn’t.

Technically it won’t matter to you since you’ll be dead. It won’t matter to anyone else as the copy at the other side will have your very memory and thoughts. However if your awareness is not transfered in the process, then that’s suicide indeed.

I don’t think it has to do with the replacement of atoms in situ. Every last atom of our bodies is said to be gradually replaced over the course of seven years already, so our awareness is not in matter itself but rather the patterns formed by that matter and the impulses creating our thought process. If you make a copy of that pattern -elsewhere-, it’s therefore nothing but a copy.

What the rat experiment shows is that it might be possible to connect the thoughts of two bodies together (say the original and a ‘new’ copy), making them one being, then stimulate the thoughts to happen more and more in the new body and less and less in the old one, until the awareness effectively transfered itself to the new location.

Whether or not this actually happens is something none of us will know until we do the experiment ourselves.

We just need to be able to move awareness. Then we can have teleporters. Or maybe then we won’t need human bodies and all become robots?
