Trees Optimization Without Terrain?

Hi all.

When you paint trees on a terrain it dose a nice job with transforming them into billboads from far away and so on.

How can I do the same with those exact trees but not having them on terrain ?. is there a way for manually placed vegetation have the same properties as the one placed on terrain ?

By writting your own system only I fear.

The foliage support in unity is limited to the terrain. No terrain = no “trees”, only static meshes
