Just wondering if anybody is using TreeSketch (iOS) with Unity. Since Unity’s Tree Creator seems to be gone, this looks like it could be a pretty usable alternative. Two problems I’ve run into though, and was hoping someone could help.
The trees have LOTS of polygons, probably too many for use on mobile. I can’t find any way to reduce the polygon count, or produce simplified trees suitable for mobile.
The other problem is that leaves are only visible from one side. This is a problem I’ve had with 2D planes imported from Cheetah 3D, and have never been able to solve. Trees look kind of funny when whole sections appear and disappear when the camera moves.
The reason you only see one sided leaves is because the mesh is single sided and the shader you are using is performing back face culling. Either make the mesh 2 sided or change the shader.
Thanks. Yes, I see that some of the particle shaders are two sided. Unfortunately, SpeedTree appears to be rental only—$19 per month, which seems pretty excessive (even if we didn’t try to avoid rental software). Also looks like you have to pay an additional license fee per game.
I have since discovered that the Unity Tree Creator is now the Tree Editor, and it still available in Unity 5. Unfortunately, a bug makes it mostly unusable (can’t see any of the variables in the Inspector).
Using Unity 5.1.0f3, and it happens in a new project. Create a terrain, create a tree, select the tree, view the Tree Editor in the Inspector. It looks like this:
I posted this in another thread, and submitted a bug report.
Resizing the panel just makes the sliders longer. I can’t find a way to show the entire variable names, and hovering the mouse over them does nothing.
Hey just to clarify, SpeedTree is $19 dollars a month for the modeler, if you get it for one month, make 20 trees and then don’t renew, those assets are yours to keep. This gives indie devs more options to pay only for the time they need. You can also grab some of our tuned models in the Unity Asset Store and drop them in a scene without ever needing to have a subscription, although it’s handy if you want to make any adjustments to the built in wind effects, AO, LODs, or if you need to make some variations.
There are zero additional licensing fees for using the SpeedTree subscription model though
You’re right, that is a little vague. I’ve updated our FAQ for clarification. SpeedTree for Games is a separate product than our Unity or UE4 Subscription Modeler. You can view the updated FAQ here.
