Trying to use the sprite editor but most of the buttons are greyed out, how do I fix this?

As the title says, I’m trying to use the sprite editor and most of the options are greyed out. Not sure what I am doing wrong here alt text .

I’ve done a dozen different Google searches with no luck, I must be using the wrong keywords. I appreciate your help!

set the sprite mode in the editor to multiple and you are good
