Trying to use trail renderer to create a flame trail

I am trying to make a flame trail an object that is being fired by a turret that I have scripted to shoot a prefab. I am thinking it is done with the trail renderer, but I cannot seem to figure out how to use it to create the flame trail. Any suggestions?

You should get the Detonator pack from the web or asset store (free), it has lots of nice things you might find handy to make such a thing
