I’ve got Unity 3.5 and would like to try Unity 4 without knackering up 3.5. Can I run the two version independently to try Unity 4?

Yes. Just install Unity 4 into another folder. Or rename the Unity 3.5 folder. And of course backup your project before you try to open it with Unity 4. Once converted there is no way back.
