TV out on App Store?

Hi everybody… does anyway know for sure if APIs that enable external video output are forbidden ?

There are actually some (non Apple) Apps like Netflix or iAnnotate PDF that enable the iPhone’s / iPad’s video out… So it must be possibile in some ways…

iOS4 has an api for it given you have the addon from apple too

What addon do you mean? Do you mean a video output cable?

one of their AV cables, right.

I had look in Apple’s Docs but can’t find any trace of the Video out API; can you provide me a hint where to search ? (an dmostly where they say it’s legal to use it)
Thanks !

I bought an AV cable for my iPhone last year, assuming it would be useful for presenting apps with a projector. I was kind of lost for words to find the cable only worked in conjunction with iTunes movies and photos.

Surely plugging in an AV cable means “I want to output my iPhone display to something bigger”? Why isn’t their a general option in settings to turn on AV out? Why does it matter to Apple if it is a movie or an app that is being displayed???

The cable has sat in the box unused since I bought it.

I agree, it’s pretty dumb that video out can’t be set to mirror the screen, especially on the iPad.

I’d guess that Apple was caving in to Hollywood, who probably feared that the end user could somehow use this ability to copy movies/tv shows. Which is probably why the movie apps that support video out will only do it in low-res.

Of course, for that decision to make any sense, you’d have be willing to ignore the fact that our laptops already have that functionality, or that the end user can always opt to jailbreak their iDevice, download a torrent, rip a DVD, etc.
