UA 2009: AugustWind - The season of dreams and cloudeels

Hello everyone,

I’ve wanted to register to show you something. AugustWind is a free roaming shmup set in a fantasy future of flying islands, airplanes and cloudeels.

Maybe some of you remeber FEIST from last year? The two guys were students at the university of the arts in Zürich when they started the game and it was their Bachelor Project. Again this year some people created a few Unity games as their final exam.

AugustWind can be played with a keyboard and a Mouse. You key game mechanic is that you try to earn money by collecting metal with your magnet. Those chunks of metal get transported upward through a thick cloud layer by giant cloudeels during the season of august Think of it as a friendly competition you have to pay a starting fee for. You also have a partner at you side, Penelope, which will fly off to valuable materials, so you can earn big cash if you pay attention to your seeker.

However since it is a “Freeroaming Shooter” you can also just ignore her and go fight local pirates, participate in gambling races or search the area for hidden airplane parts.

As you earn money you can then upgrade your plane with it and get better in six stats like armor, weapons or your magnet.

Of course the game isn’t completely finished. It lacks storyline missions and is only three days long as it is. But there is only so much you can do alone in three and a half months.

The game and media can be found here:

I hope you enjoy the prototype as it is and feedback is always welcome, even though I will probably leave it as it is now.

P.S I’d also like to submit the game to the Unity Awards 09 if that is ok by the guidelines.

Wonderful.

The entire theme reminds me of something Miyazaki might dream up, which is as high a compliment as I’m capable of.

Niice work. I love the graphics

Looks awesome!

Edit: nevermind, I see your application email!

Yes, thanks Higgy, I figured it out a few minutes later.

Also thanks a lot Charles, that is an awesome compliment indeed.

@boxhedteam, thanks. I looked up your blog and that rendering of the character on the shark is absolutely stunning

I have to apologize to the people who dowloaded it yesterday, a friend fo mine reminded me that both the input of the dying screen didnt work and the idlecounter returning to the menu is still in place. Those were both relics from the exhibition, should be fixed now.

In return some artwork from the production

Wow, this is extremely charming.

Ditto, charming sums up the graphics perfectly, very classy work.

Thanks a lot guys!

AugustWind has now been up for a bit more than a week and it is going pretty smoothly. It got a feature on indiegames.com and apoon.com which gets me close to 4000 Downloads of the game so far. It’s really cool to see the project being liked

I’ll shamelessly bump this topic a bit by showing off some sprites now.

These are the complete sets of plane parts you could obtain in the game. However, you probably will end up with a mix of those.

And those are some of the island sprites

The style lured me in and I’m very pleased with the play.
Very nice work. Good luck with the competition.

Looks really great!

I would like to play it, although there is no Universal Binary build as far as I can see, can you add one?

Sure, heres the PPC and Universal versions

Have fun!

This is amazing, very unique style
