UDK: what I am missing?

What am I missing guys, I mean, why this isn’t the first thing that comes up when talking about game developing with UDK.

What’s the method for start coding your game? As in… you gotta double click the script asset in unity.
But, how is it done in UDK?
Well, after you find how is it done in the UDK documentation you get this info, so this is what i’m talking about:

Get to the link below and find “Getting Started Programming on the Unreal Development Kit” and click on it
http://www.udk.com/documentation
See? That’s plain crazy!

When I tried unity I was making stuff spin on their Y axis with javascript after 5 minutes. I never got to the part you actually type some code with UDK. First thing you wanna do is the ‘hello world’ thing, but it’s terribly difficult to figure it out in UDK, completely eliminating the user friendly feeling to me.

When I tried UDK I couldn’t get past:

Really? Open an .ini file?

really?

In unity you just double click your script and you instantly start coding awesomeness.

Huh? You’re forced to get your OWN ide? you’re just FORCED. UDK sure includes lots of commodities, yet they seem to bluntly overlooked the fact you actually need to code to make your games, and that you might want this part to have some commodities as well, like their own IDE. But instead they suggest you can use ‘any text editor’… are they suggesting notepad?

Sure, if you’re going to do commercial games you might be able to ignore this terrible MESS, but seriously… even compiling method looks like they didn’t care much for user friendliness.

And only recently I found where the unreal script reference was, which no one in the community cared to tell me until I gave up UDK.

These things are supposed to make things easy, and it’s a quite shame, this is the only thing that made me gave up UDK, only one thing, but quite important. It’s like they let you drive their car for free, BUT… you gotta get your own steering wheel and figure out how to install it. Yeah, no thanks, I rather use unity, they let you drive their car, gas is on the house, and steering wheel is included, thank you.

What you are missing is one of the two things:

  1. reasonable thinking to post on the UDK board about UDK instead of plagueing the Unity board about competing stuff.
  2. Bread

dreamora, is this a place to be talking about bread?

Sure, as much as the tables in Burger King are to eat your McDonalds food

You are not forced at all to use Visual Studio with UDK, but you are to use an external editor.
Secondly to that, Most if not all serious engines require external coding, just like you use other external tools like modeling/sound/graphics -tools.
Unity goes by this too (read the docs).
Making Visual studio project files inside Unity, and syncing them. Then editing them within Visual Studio.
reason: bugtracing, language completion, and other means, which you don’t have with the integrated text editor in Unity (what it basically is).

It’s the prefered method, UT stated themselves.
(or Xforce or something like that name under OSX)
so essentially it’s the same.

The other part about the documentation, is merely a personal opinion. Some like UDN better (more completed, more examples etc) compared to Unity, or vice versa.

Yeah, you are 100% right on that. But what about user friendliness? See I’m not a professional programmer, I’m a self taught amateur, and in UDK front page says it’s for “everyone, anyone, you” and that’s where the mistake is. I was thrown off by this complex method of getting code to work. Sure now I could give it another shot, but the magic is gone, and I don’t feel like getting a headache while unity makes it so much easier.

EXACTLY the same thoughts here. It felt to me like some of the stuff I would like to do was hardcoded over there or something and I had little options. I had some arguments with people over code. (One guy told me you can’t do something that I did…even after I did it and it worked… he then told me I need to actually learn programming/scripting…Made no sense at all)

All I could find was some weird drag and drop system of pseudo code they use and it felt like 90% of the people were just wanting to do a lame mod of UT lol.

In a perfect world I would have limitless time and money and be able to make my OWN engine. This is not the case so I agree and will stick to what makes more sense logically. Mod a (IMO crappy game)vs make my own in unity. I pick Unity. Even if the shadows don’t fall quite right and look jagged. I am sure that will be cleared up eventually anyway. Same goes for those nasty looking black circles.

I agree with dreamora here… this topic seems completely irrelevant on these forums. I mean the gossip section should be pretty open to what can be discussed, but some of the topics lately are pretty ridiculous… “why is my computer slow?”, “why did my HD get partitioned this way?”, “UDK vs Unity discussion #301”, “PC vs Mac brawl # 1 million”, etc.

Let’s try and keep the topics at least somewhat orbiting in the vicinity of Unity or search for topics that have already beaten the subject to death before

Alright, I see what you’re saying. So what should we do about ‘General discussion’ forum description?

Look, I wont touch this subject if it’s against the rules. But ‘completely irrelevant on these forums’? It’s not like i was talking about potatos. I mean, I’m talking about a gamedev tool that isn’t unity, but it is game making related, plus it’s been compared TO unity the whole process. It might be somewhat unrelated to unity, I give you that, but…‘gossip’ forum, I mean, are you really complaining?
Also for the sake of coexistence with veteran users like yourself, if you believe this is a touchy subject, or disagree with what I said too much, I agree to stop posting stuff like this , but please don’t decrease the value of this thread by saying it’s completely irrelevant.
Remember, we’re not going to run out of internet, there’s space for everyone. It’s not more ridiculous to post somewhat unrelated subjects than complaining about them.

Haha now when i think about it. You are absolutely right. We do have kinda funny topics here. Looks like moderating a Gossip section might become a full time job some-day :frowning:

@dogzerx

About the UDK problem i think its best to ask it in UDK forum. I dont think that anyone here will have any motivation to help you.

If this was posted in the UDK forum, I’m sure they’d say that if you want to compare it to Unity you should post it in the Unity forums.

@gotmilk

But I never asked for help. I just was expressing my opinion.

You really think there should be a moderator that eliminates threads like this one out of the… GOSSIP forum?
If you do, instead of thinking ‘moderate forum’… try ‘renaming forum’… maybe something like ‘Unity related subjects only’

It’s like trying to moderate a ‘fruit’ forum to exclude everything that’s not about ‘bananas’

…goes and buys UnityVsUDK.com… sets up forum and ad space… 2 million visitors post that the latest cryengine “pwns” them both.

It seems like the perfect type of subject for just general game discussion sites. Except it’s hard to find people knowledgeable in the game development process in those sites.

I don’t see why this wouldn’t belong here. He was talking about his experience with UDK and comparing it to his positive experience with Unity.

Yeah, it’s fine, and It’s the very rare occasion when I’d moderate anything in Gossip just for being random (hell, there’s a Mario’s 25th birthday thread in here). I guess I just don’t understand the need for yet another thread about UDK vs Unity… aren’t there enough of them? Comparing Unity to UDK (or any other competing engine) around here is just fine, but why make several threads that rehash the same things over and over?

Imagine if we hadn’t kept the iPhone ToS topic to one thread… it would’ve been madness around here

I think the problem we all have with your thread is that you came here with a predetermined opinion just to rant on another software.

What point is there to such a thread? Trying to get people to agree with you or prove you wrong?

Reword you post and post it on the UDK forums and maybe people will help you use the software instead, but I guess that was never the point.

Btw, do you even know what an IDE is? Because I don’t see one included with Unity so I fail to see why you make such a big point of there not being one in UDK.

Alright…the point of the thread is, believe it or not, is explained in the topic name. See, it’s in the form of a question “UDK: what I am missing?”. If you had paid attention, you’d know there’s a feature about UDK that I dislike. So, ‘what am I missing’ is inviting you to enlighten me in case I’m…well… missing something?
Yeah, simple isn’t it? So now that you know, you are welcome to do so any time you wish.

About the IDE… I think it includes a code editor, a compiler/interpreter, and a debugger. If you want you can tell me what IDE really is, so I can stop misapplying the word

@dogrerx

I apologize. I only read the topic subject “UDK: what I am missing?” and quickly skimmed trough your post. I was under the impression that you wanted UDK related help. Your topic is suitable for the gossip section.

But we do have a lot of pointless threads in here. Some of them are not even related to gaming. I would like to see Unity forum as a noise free environment. If i want to read about slow computers or some sick bastard who throws puppys into river, i would go elsewhere.
