I know this is a Windows issue, but am hoping someone can shed some light I’ve yet to find on Google.
I’m having a pretty major issue with my UI icons becoming garbled in some Windows applications. The two I can see this in are: Unity and 3ds max.
For example:
(notice the rendering issues with the top toolbar and status bar at the bottom)
…and in 3ds max:
(garbled application bar and UI toolbar dock)
Some notes:
- I’ve installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers.
- I’m on 3 monitors (two ATI cards).
- Windows is up-to-date.
- Never had this problem before - I hadn’t used these programs in a month or two, but they worked fine the last time.
- I have rebuilt Windows’ icon cache (appears it’s only for desktop/explorer icons.)
Anyone else ever dealt with this? I’d rather spend a day or two trying to figure it out instead of spending several days reinstalling everything just because of one little bug…
Just a head’s up, I was able to narrow it down to an issue with multiple monitors.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 4500 and Radeon HD 3400 for 3 monitors. When I disable the HD 3400 completely, my UI in Unity and 3ds max appear normal. When I enable the 3400, everything turns to plop (as seen in the screenshots above.)
It seems as long as the 3400 is on and controlling at least 1 screen, the UI icons become garbled.
I’m in the process of figuring out what to do next.
Forgot to mention I’m also Windows 7 - as it turns out, I was able to fix the problem by disabling Aero (I’ve switched the theme to Windows 7 Basic, ultimately.)
I’d imagine it must have been a problem with a recent Windows update.
Thanks, Microsoft! As usual, you’re a pain in the ass!
In the process, I was having similar issues with MonoDevelop AFTER solving the problem mentioned above. The MD interface wouldn’t load properly.
I reinstalled GTK# (a .NET lib used for MonoDevelop) and all is well at this point.
I tried re-enabling Aero after the GTK# reinstall, but still having problems – I was hoping GTK# would solve everything as it’s a GUI toolkit.
Still not using Aero (no need anyway.)
I had a similar issue with my previous ATI Radeon card - it seems that my GPU memory had worn out and replacing the GPU resolved the issue for me.
