I see this in 2020.3.6f1 too. So it’s not a very recent regression. I don’t remember when they broke it.
2020 I think, part of the new UI
EDIT: 2019.3 is when the new UI was ̶s̶h̶o̶v̶e̶d̶ ̶d̶o̶w̶n̶ ̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶r̶o̶a̶t̶ unveiled
Is this really a regression? We actually wrote a CustomPropertyDrawer (Unity 2017, 2018) to support what you show in the first image. That’s not Unity standard as far as I remember.
nah that was standard on 4.6 and 2017
You should comment about this in their Roadmap where they are actually asking about these regressions
I hate that web site. There’s no acknowledgement, unidirectional comment system, can’t see what others have suggested. Talking to the void. Your comments go in and may as well be getting shredded up immediately.
Hi @Prodigga , I participated in setting up the roadmap website and I’d like to chime in following your comment above to get more details and improve.
The roadmap pages have indeed been designed for not being a community conversation. There are several reasons for this. First, many users are reluctant to participate in open conversations and would keep their feedback to themselves. This provides them with an official way to engage with the product team. Secondly, our product teams are quite overwhelmed with the quantity of conversations happening in the open, and this format help directing the feedback in the context of the plans we’re making, simplifying drastically the interpretation needed for the sometimes quite complex feedback. Finally we already have a place for community conversations, and this is the forum, where we would continue to engage with you like this, but the forum is not a great place to put together the entirety of the plan across the various teams.
About the space feeling like a black hole: if you participate, your feedback will be attached to the cards you are commenting on, and you will be notified when those cards evolve with the next step of our plans. We would make them evolve and also linking it to active conversations.
Those pages are still in beta and we are already improving things based on early feedback, but your opinion matter. With this additional context on the separation of the roles of the roadmap pages and the community forums, do you feel the roadmap page could be improved from your point of view, or is it just not fitting the experience you’d like to interact with us?
Thanks,
Laurent
I think there is a bigger problem here with some of us in the community feeling unheard, Unity feeling like this black box of a company that’s just moving in their own direction regardless of feedback. You have websites like the Roadmap and the new Unity Pulse website that don’t actually allow for open discussion and feedback submission so they just reinforced this feeling of not being heard. So then you get told to post on the forums, and you post, and it’s rare that you get a follow up from a developer. (Some Unity Devs are better than others but only for the part of the code base they manage.).
Then you see the annual “you’ve talked and we’ve listened!” posts from Unity and oh boy does that make my blood boil.
Maybe a small step towards making it feel a bit more community driven is to expose the comment and vote counts on the cards to the public. (Show what percentage of people think the feature is Nice to have/important/critical, and how many voted) The website looks dead and you’d have no idea if it was maintained or not. I certainly thought it was dead until recently when someone linked it and I saw some cards had transitioned to a different state.
And also, an easier way to find these product boards. The only one I was aware of was the URP one… I didn’t realise there was this … other one? How many are out there ? Why aren’t they unified. What dark corner of the unity website do I need to navigate to to find them all.
I’m not the only one who thinks these boards might just be dead or abandoned either…
They have been unified for some time actually. (Although it’s hard to find for the first time)
Roadmap: unity.com/roadmap/unity-platform
@Prodigga Have you reached out / been reached out by Unity success team? They seem pretty on-point for gathering input and pushing it directly to devs. In some cases, even get access to information that otherwise would be difficult to find about current status of certain features.
Between them, the forums and the roadmap… it’s all good steps in the right direction IMHO.
@LaurentGibert The only thing I would improve is a status that actually mean something for each roadmap card. More transparency (e.g. "Being worked on by 2 devs, tasks 16/62 completed, 0 blockers, expected first release Unity 2022.1a). God forbid I actually refer to Starcitizen but… Star Citizen Roadmap - RSI.
Merci!
I also agree on the point that currently it really looks like a black-box (the roadmap portal)
You should make it possible for us to see other people’s suggestion (maybe make it anonymous if required)
And let us vote for them, it will much more efficient this way than going through hundreds of slight variation of the same feature which would definitely help this point
Currently, we get no feedback on whether our suggestion is being considered and/or are other Developers are asking for the same feature, which may help us set expectations on whether or not that feature may be considered a priority.
And, this was maybe overlooked but the only time I can see the cards I added a suggestion to is when I add another suggestion because that’s the only way to login to my account right now over there
Ha, yes I should have clarified I was talking about all those boards together using unity.com/roadmap/unity-platform. It is actually hard to find because we haven’t made any communication about it yet, as there are still a few tweaks we’re making to the overall experience, including the problem of having to log in to see the personal content and submit feedback, which should be solved with Unity ID support.
I can definitely understand the feeling of not seeing enough engagement from the Unity product team. It is actually quite hard to find a good balance, as engaging with the community can easily become a full-time job. I am just thinking how hours could fly when I start wandering around the forums. But it is necessary so we keep a great connection with you. You guys are at the center of what we are trying to accomplish, and we talk about it every day.
Regarding the votes, yes we removed this recently, but it might still be interesting to share this number back with everyone. I take note of this to be discussed with the rest of the teams.
Thanks for pointing out another thread without an official answer, I will go there later today.
Feedback should allow image drop like in the forum because many artists are more visual than verbal.
Maybe there could be a system where each card on the roadmap site automatically creates and links a forum thread? Possibly in a locked-down section of the forum where regular users cannot create threads, only discuss on the ones provided.
This way discussion is kept separated from information and both devs and users know where to expect it to happen
Good ones @laurentlavigne (nice first name!) and @JoNax97 , thanks for sharing.
