Unable to apply change to prefab base if not opening prefab view. 2023.2.0a20

I don’t know what version of Unity broke this but you are no longer able to apply change to prefab base without opening the prefab editor. This use to work fine.

I understand that this may be a design decision. But understand that this used to work fine. Opening the prefab editor every time you need to apply change to base is incredibly cumbersome.

FYI you’re still able to revert fields back to parent value directly in the project folder, so at the very least this is very inconsistent.

Repro is really simple:

  1. Create a Dummy Prefab
  2. Attach a dummy script with single float field _myFloat
  3. Create Variant from Dummy Prefab
  4. Modify field on variant in the project folder
  5. Select Dummy in the project folder
  6. Right click myFloat in the inspector shown by and select Apply to ‘Dummy’
    Error is shown

Reading the error message carefully it seems like this is indeed a bug and not intended. I am not applying to a prefab instance but rather the prefab itself. Just the prefab in the project folder.

Yeah it’s annoying but Unity seems to be crashing less lately so i’ll take it.
