When I first start up unity I am unable to connect to the license server which makes me unable to activate my free license.

That's a tricky one. You might try again, later, just in case the server is temporarily down or otherwise unreachable. The volunteers here probably can't help you, unfortunately. Recommend you get in touch with official Unity support: http://unity3d.com/contact
