Understanding audio mixing - channels seem to be "fighting" one another.

Hi there. I’m pretty new to audio.

I’m having a hard time understanding the way Unity mixes audio. When I have two audio sources playing on loop, and I turn the volume of one up, the other one actually appears to get quieter. I tested this with music and loud footsteps looping in a scene. as I turn the music way up, the footsteps actually can’t be heard anymore.

This is having an unfortunate effect on my mix, because when I start playing music, important sound effects become less audible than they should be.

This would suggest that I need boosted 3D settings for sounds that I want to have played with music. Surely that’s not a good idea.

Hi

Sounds like it could be something to do with audio ducking, see bottom of link.

Thanks very much!

I haven’t yet configured any ducking, and I’m pretty sure that this happens when the sounds are in the same mixer, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutt it might not, so I’ll test that…
