Unfair rating system in asset store

Yesterday i noticed my asset is no longer 5* rated, but it have 4 stars now. So far i only had happy customers, as you can see by 4 written reviews: Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making
Since i had 4 x 5 star reviews, and now my asset dropped to 4 stars, this means i probably got 1 star rating from someone. But since he/she did not left any review, and no one contacted me on email, i don’t know what the problem is, if the problem exists. I have suspicions this might be someone targeting me to bring me down. Some competitor, or some developer who wants this assets all for himself and is trying to prevent others from buying it. I had sale of this pack 2 days ago, and in less then 24 hours i got that rating. It don’t feel right. I joined Unity asset store 10 months ago. My goal is to make this my full time job. I provide support to my customers, i respond to emails in same day, and i solve issues if they happen. I work for some of my clients on custom models for them as we speak, since they are so happy with my work they want more. So why is this allowed? Someone just give me one star without any explanation why, bringing my overall rating to 4 stars. That is very unfair.

Very unfair.
I have another case.
A few days ago I have noticed my asset is assigned by mistake to a wrong category.
I made an update with a category change.
A few days later the category got updated, but the 5 stars rating got lost and now it says “no enough ratings”.
The sales have dropped almost to zero, because who would buy an asset that was released 3 or 4 years ago and has not earned enough ratings yet?
I keep on sending updates, with messages only asking to bring the ratings back, but no results yet.
Here is this asset:

I am not sure whether I should make it free asset or just to discontinue.

I have also started this thread:

Is there a possiblity that review was submitted for moderation?

Your asset is quite expensive, so I think that people that are interested in buying it, will for sure look at the written review section and see that there is nothing but positive things. If I were you, I would put my email on top of the description and let the people know that they should contact you before writing a review if they encounter any issues.

Do you think this is affecting your sales?

Edit: Let’s suppose that the 4 star rating appears when the average rating is less than 4.5. That means that the given rating that pulled you down to 4 stars was 2 stars maximum. That does seem very strange compared to the perfect 5 star ratings you got before.

Edit 2: Maybe Unity could implement a system where the uses is required to write a review when he puts in a rating that is 1 or 2 stars since people usually give those ratings when they have a serious problem with the asset and can’t get it to work properly.

-Thank you for your advice i will make my email more visible and i will add my facebook and twitter just in case.

-I don’t know will this affect my sales, i have 4 stars since yesterday.

-That is my point, if someone is legitimately so unhappy with the models, he/she should contact me with their problems. I am here to solve them.

That is possible?

We customers look mostly at the written reviews anyway. If one asset has 5 starts without any written reviews and one 4 star with happy customers in the written review section I take the one with 4 stars

Also, dont forget to click the “Show all x reviews”. Its not always the most helpful are true to the actual state of the asset

The reviews are there now.

The rewievs didn’t get lost, but the reviews is what you see the second. The first what you see browsing the assets is “no enough ratings”. I might be interpreted as if the asset were dead - on the asset that was first released 3 or 4 years ago.

I guess it must be some system error that the ratings didn’t survive the category change.

People can rate without leaving a review. It is probably worth closer to 4 stars if that is the average.

There’s a lot wrong with the store, for example it is ridiculous that sellers cannot contact buyers with an opt-in tickbox. You can do this with retail, why not asset store?

Also as suggested above, it would be nice if reviews had a mandatory bit of text.

Does 5 stars require 100% 5 star reviews, or is there some rounding up possible when for example you get nine 5 stars and one 4 star?

I have an asset that has mostly 5 star reviews, but gets an overall 4 star rating as well.

5 Stars: 8
4 Stars: 3
Overall 4 Stars :frowning:
Should be 4.73 Stars, which I would think should round up to 5 instead of rounding down to 4.

Those are probably the unwritten ratings that weigh down your score.

Put on your big boy panties and deal.

Not everyone is going to like your asset. Not every customer is going to think it’s worth taking the time to contact a dev to sort through problems they have. Not everyone sees the point to writing text in a review.

Having unhappy customers happens. Don’t let it bother you, just move on.

Are you suggesting someone spent 160$ and if he/she encountered problem, instead of trying to make me solve it to not waste his/her money, he just said “f it” and gave me 1 star and walked away? If you are going to spend 160$, you probably already have elaborate idea for your project what to do with it. So this customer forfeited 160$ and his project, instead of contacting me? Hmmm.Other things i mentioned above look much more likely to me.
My problem is not only this asset having 4 stars now. My entire shop now have 4 stars since this is my only asset with enough ratings so far, which is projected to my store profile. And i’m making new pack which will be very interesting i believe, and when new customers come, and click on my profile, they will see 4 star rated shop. Most probably wont bother to look why i have 4 stars and will move on.
I have my big boy pants for things in life which i cant change. Like war, disease, etc. But this is something that can be changed. It is unfair. I am not corporation with thousands of employees to just accept bad reviews without any clarified reason from occasional ,customers. I am just one guy trying to get by by doing my work as best as i can.

This rating system can be changed as mentioned above by making customer to write review if he/she want to give low ratings. I believe that would be only fair.

Who are you to decide which rating is valid and which one is not, exactly? People don’t owe you justification for their ratings at all.

Life has unfair people in it who don’t behave in a reasonable way, and no changes to the store will fix that problem.

Playing devil’s advocate for a moment, if someone is already disappointed with their purchase is it really fair to expect them to work for free in helping you to improve it?

Some things that might lose you stars that I got just from reading the Package Contents in the store:

Nested folders rather than the usual Unity Textures folders etc.
Things in mislabelled folders: eg a shader in a scripts folder
Duplicate content: eg Glasses Color.png, Putin color.png
Spelling inconsistancies: Is it Bill or Bil?
Lack of prefabs.

That’s just from a quick look, some people knock a star off a review for each perceived flaw so it’s not hard to see how they might end up at 1.

People are strange creatures. That is entirely within the range of possibility. There are also plenty of other scenarios that I can think of that aren’t as exaggerated.

Life is unfair. Get used to it. If you are going to sell things to the public to make a living, you are going to have to get used to dealing with the fickle nature of the public.

There are plenty of things with four star ratings featured on the front page. A four star rating isn’t going to turn many customers away. The small number of reviews, limited audience potential, and the high price point probably will.

I am a rare buyer on the asset store and i only purchased extensions like SI3, not models, etc. to give you some context to my feedback.

1- good to give feedback to the asset store team, sure some things can be done better / different
2- focus on achieving what you believe is the optimal sales strategy under the current system (not so different from other rating systems, i.e. Mobile app stores, etc)
3- At your price point, I would for sure do some research before buying and I guess what could convince me would be

  • 1 free fully featured model to test with (this would likely also get you a good rating as a developer as no one whould discount stars for value for money)
  • favorable written reviews or forum posts.
  • your time span selling and supporting assets
  • variety of assets (since its gfx, models)
  • not too many reviews for the particular asset to be purchased, as I would rather not buy something that many others already use

For me a 4 star rating with say 100+ reviewers would be more favorable than a 5 star review by less than 10 customers.

Since what you sell is fairly specific, I would look at all comparable assets no matter the rating.

Hope this helps.
