No, you can just import a font at a higher resolution in about 2 seconds, there’s no reason why you should use the default. Not that actual 3D text models are useless, but I’m afraid these have far too many polygons; 90% of the polys on the edge faces don’t serve any purpose and should be eliminated.

What I dislike about the mesh text is how there is no handy option to make sure it gets occluded by other objects in 3D space, but that’s probably a shader thing.
(Edit: You want text to be visible at all times most of the time anyway)
As for the “grainy” problem; it’s very possible to have high-resolution mesh text, you just need to play with the font size and character size as below:
A 200 size font at 10% character size gives you a high-resolution 20 pt font.
