I have a student that has installed the pro version by mistake and needs to run the free version. How does he go about his? He has tried uninstalling and installing over the top.
I think changing the serial number under Help is the way to do this. Just swap it for a serial number for the free version.
He can’t actually get into the application to see the Help menu. And the Help that comes up when telling him the trial has finished takes him to the website. Was there somewhere else I should be looking?
If the trial is finished, it should be the free version.
There are no separate Pro and Free downloads of the software, they are just licenses that enable/disable certain portions.
Here are the messages he is getting.

Find the ULF file that is mentioned on the bottom of that page. Quit Unity (by force if necessary), then delete the ULF file - make sure it’s really deleted and not hiding in the waste bin. Then start Unity and it should ask to be activated. If you cannot connect to the license server, use Manual activation instead.
