So yeah, as you may know there is a pretty low filesize limit which apps may not surpass to still be downloadable over 3G. Initially it was at 10 Mb, a while ago it has been raised to 20 Mb.
While that may initially sound ok one can (not just with unity) surpass that limit VERY easily, especially when doing universal binaries or apps tailored for iPhone4 or iPad what with higher screen dimension/resolution wanting to get filled with bigger filesize nicer graphics.
So yeah, i think it would be very useful to both app developers aswell as customers if the current filesize limit for downloads over 3G could be raised considerably, at least to twice of what it is now.
Besides just the inconvenience to customers that they can´t download bigger content over 3G there is also additional confusion momentum added as apps can actually be bought but then not be downloaded.

While I would love to see this happen, I don’t think its realistic. Especially with atts new data plans, a 20mb app already uses up 10% of a users data(if they have the basic data plan which most do). So, while I would love to see this done, I don’t think it will happen.
I don´t take it for granted either but i hope there´s some chance for it if enough people request it.
The iPhone is sold in many more countries meanwhile and in several of them there´s meanwhile quite a stable 3G infrastructure and many customers also have higher limit data plans. To me it also feels like meanwhile Apple has quite some market force with the iPhone and comparing their last few iPhone presentations i noticed that they more and more openly talk about what they dislike in the telcos´services every year and they seem to put more pressure on the telcos delivering improved service (features) asap.
Apple seems to have a good card in the game what with always having that joker of abandoning the exclusive deal with a single telco provider in a country and they seem to be willing to use it when needed.
To my knowledge there are only few iPhone countries left where a single telco sells the device exclusively, in those where several are selling it competition will improve things, in those where a single one keeps selling it exclusively there´s some pressure to please Apple as possible to keep the exclusivity.
So yeah, to me it looks like there is a chance for it happening sometime soon if its made clear its an important thing to customers =)
On a sidenote: regarding such things it will also be interesting to see how things evolve when cloud based iTunes gets announced and also when and if the next iPod touch supports facetime calls without data plan (well, only over wifi, but hey, nice anyway). But yeah, already slightly a different topic, though tangentially related heavily =)
