Unity 1.6.1 1.6.2 not working with PPC 10.4.9 ????

Hi,

I’d recently wiped my machine and did a fresh re-install. I’m now running OSX 10.4.9 on my 1.67Ghz G4 laptop (2Gb RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 w. 128 Mb).

I downloaded the latest Unity installer (1.6.2) and gave it a spin - installer worked fine, but the application didn’t work. I then tried installing the previous one (1.6.1) and that didn’t work either… then re-updated to 1.6.2 (still no love).

I could get to the try/register/buy popup, clicking try sends my computer into infinite looping (the fan kicks in an my ‘Activity Monitor’ tells me the CPU has taken over ~90%). The register feature works and I’ve gone through it and registered my version… after this, the same thing happens, CPU goes mad and Unity never starts.

Also, it both Safari and Firefox asks to be restarted, when I do this, they both load the UnityTest page, but once the loading bar get’s to 100% nothing happens.

Have I missed something obvious?

Hoping for help!
Mikkel

Please run the bug reporter at /Applications/Unity/Report Bug.app immediately after Unity hangs. Add your email and a small description of the problem. That way we get hardware information, and the logfile (hopefully) containing the error messages.

done! let me know if there’s anything else i can share/send.

I went through the previous discussion about this, and realized that the Console might shed some light on my issue… this is the continuous error:

** (process:1169): CRITICAL **: _wapi_shm_semaphores_init: semget error: No space left on device. Try deleting some semaphores with ipcs and ipcrm

…not sure what to make of it though!

I so hope you can find an answer to this. This error has dogged us at school since the start of the year. We use intel macs however, but the error is the same. I installed my personal license at school last thursday but due to that same error, i cant even use it.

The people at school arent going to rebuild the school servers because one app wont run( Unity will run on some computers but not others), so its unless OTEE find a cure, we’re probably both screwed. I’d be interested to know how many bug reports the guys have had about this issue.

I use a g4 desktop, and im running 10.4.8, and Unity 1.6.1. Theres no way Im going to change that, given that theres a possibility that production may grind to a halt if I “upgrade”.

I have reported this error earlier in the year, so presumably someones had a look at it. Good luck mkoser. You might be better off downgrading. Its annoying I cant use Unity at school, but I’d be completely and utterly spewing if I couldnt use it at all.

Anyone overcome this bug?

when I run applications, built as standalone, with unity 1.6.1 my system crashes too … however … when I run the ATI demo’s (from their website) to see if my graphics card/drivers are causing the problems there are no crying.

i’m making slow progress … the IT dude who reinstalled my machine (it’s a work machine, but I use it for all things personal aswell) tells me he’s given me full administrator rights (I’m not sure I believe him!)…

so - I created a new user on my machine and logged in again … this time, when I run Unity it asks me to ‘Set Permissions’ (I never get that ‘Set Permissions’ popup with my normal login). I clicked that and BINGO Unity starts!

I’m guessing some of the clever VPN and secure server connectivity (not to mention the LanDesk softwares IT has installed to monitor me!) is causing the problems… will hassle the IT dudes more today to get to the bottom of this!

Well we found a workaround thats so simple it makes me wonder why I didnt do this in the first place.

Unplug from the server…

Doing so allows Unity to run, then I can just plug in the ethernet cable to get to my files. What a pita that was, and what a dunce I’ve been for not thinking of that sooner! Sorry bout the gripes

turns out, the user profile IT had setup for me, had some sort of ‘mobile’ setting which let me connect easier to our servers and wifi in the office… but conflicted with Unity (and I’m guessing, the rights to handle the files or something like that).

the weird thing on top of that was, that once I deleted that user profile and created a brand-spanking new one (standard OSX user with admin rights) unity still complained. That user was called ‘mkoser’. I tried creating one called ‘mikkel’ with exactly the same settings AND THIS ONE WORKED!!!

Dunno if my newly (non-mobile) created mkoser-user was somehow conflicting with my older mkoser-user which was deleted but used to register Unity with… nonetheless, it works now and I managed to get my laptop without all the IT-I-track-your-every-move softwares on
