Unity 2.5 crashing randomly on XP sp3

I have a Pentium 2.8gHz with 3GB of RAM.

Running an ATI Radeon x800 graphics card. Windows XP SP3.

Works fine with Lightwave.

Installed Unity 2.5 today and it crashed the system 3 times. Can’t see a pattern to it.

I was in the Island project. Moving the camera, and after a coupe of moves it just went black screen and froze the computer.

Then I was in Game mode “wandering” with the W key and mouse, and the screen just suddenly went black. Had to reboot it.

Any ideas for me?

Hi all.

I’m brand new to Unity, so I’m totally unfamiliar with how any of it works.

Anyway, I am getting what may be a similar crash…
I ran Unity on one of my laptops, and built the island demo into a windows executable.

I copied that whole executable folder to my other laptop and ran it.

It blue-screened.

I am running WinXP SP3, Pentium 4 3.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility x600.

Please file a bug (Help → Report a problem) with this information. The bug report will also include your hardware details (graphics driver version, etc.).

Since you seem to have similar graphics cards (Radeon Xxxx series), maybe there’s some particular driver version that has problems. Did you try updating the graphics driver?

Me too. It’s working fine when I remove the Island Demo manually. It seem the asset files corrupted.

Yesterday night, I made a presentation for my physics class and I installed the Unity for win in my teacher’s laptop, and… guess what… rsrsrs Unity crashes as soon as lunched.
I think that wasn’t a good Unity introduction to my mates (all windows users)… but don’t worry guys, I’ve thrown the fault in Microsoft

I updated the Radeon x800 Pro to the latest driver.

I loaded Unity and moved the camera along the blue axis for a bit.

Then I clicked on game mode and…CRASH! Black screen. No video. LCD power light flashing that there is no input.

Had to reboot (which takes 10 minutes and is a pain).

I’m experiencing a slightly similar problem: Using the 2.5 trial I build the island demo and ran it. The game complained about not being able to activate water reflections due to graphics card limitations but ran fine for a few seconds. As I approached the water, the display froze and a few seconds later the Ati control center popped up saying that it had to “reboot” the graphics card because it wasn’t responding.

I didn’t file any bug reports just because the game itself didn’t crash, after a few hiccups I was able to close it normally.

System:

WinXp Pro SP3
Ati x700 256mb (this thing only supports Shader Model 2.0b
Driver Packaging Version 8.561-081201a1-072271C-ATI (latest AFAIK)
2Gb RAM
Athlon X2 3600+

I am using vista and I get a bluescreen crash quite frequently (and seemingly randomly) on the island demo but so far i havn’t had any other problems. Probably just some faulty assets, i’m sure that unity will release a fixed version of the island demo. unil then just do something else with unity

Everybody here should go watch the “How to get your bugs fixed” video of Unite 08. It’s under Support> Resources> Unite presentations and will give all a better idea of bug reporting. The forum is a good tool to make sure it’s not you (the user) who is doing something wrong, but if you are many with the same problem, please report it. OTEE are probably working hard on bug fixes right now, so it’s a good time to get stuff fixed.

Cheers,

Yes, I have reported each of my crashes through the Unity system as well.

Similar crash here. I tried yesterday to show some unity features to a friend on his pc and severely crashes with the island demo. I will ask him for the pc specifications to report the problem properly.

donjuan: Your specs are sent automatically through the bug reporter.

Thanks for the tip. It’s only that I wasn’t in my computer and the crash was of the worst type, no mouse, keyboard or anything else…
