Installation stuck on visual studio
Hey people. I’ve tried contacting support via email…I’ve posted in other forums…No answer. I NEED help…I just want to learn and use Unity and the lack of support is really disheartening. I am having a lot of trouble installing Unity personal with visual studio. I have tried to install Unity with visual studio twice now, but each time the installer launches visual studio, it seems to just hover and do nothing. I’m not getting any error codes, or being told that the installer is frozen, the progress bar just lingers at the same spot and goes nowhere for hours and hours. I’ve let the installer run overnight for two different nights now, so I’ve given it plenty of time in case my connection was slow. (It isn’t.) What can I do to fully install Unity personal with visual studio? Seems pretty similar to this poster’s problem: Unity Installer stuck?... - Unity Engine - Unity Discussions
I have never bothered with Unity’s download of Visual Studio. I have always downloaded and installed it myself. Here are roughly the steps I use to install both. Just go to the following website, select the left-most entry labelled “Visual Studio Community”, and once it’s downloaded run it.
https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/
Once the installer has started scroll down the list of options until you see “Game Development with Unity”, select it and disable “Unity 5.6 editor” in the right-side panel, and click the button in the lower-right corner of the window to start the installation. It’s an approximately one to two gigabyte download.
After that install Unity without selecting Visual Studio.

Ryiah, thank you for the suggestion. I can’t even get to that screen that shows workload options. I start the Visual Studio Community 2017 installer and it loads, only to pop up with a message that says simply “Not found” before it closes automatically, without providing any other options…
***Edit: I found some suggestions on the Visual Studio download page for folks having trouble installing; Apparently I needed to reboot my computer? I did so and now I’m following your suggestion. Fingers crossed…
It’s also worth noting that you don’t need Visual Studio to use Unity. You can use MonoDevelop. Or Notepad. Or my personal preference, Script Inspector 3.
