Unity 2D and GUIs

Do you think using Unity’s 4.3 2D workflow to create GUIs with non standard controls for 3D games will be viable/possible for Desktop games?

we don’t know exactly what the 2d features will be like, but im sure there would be a way to make your own button objects and have clicks/taps to fire events or what not.

You can already do that, so you assume so!
