I am new to Unity and would like to make 2D interactive book apps and edu-games for kids. It seems to have everything i could possibly want and the FREE license for this IDE is just irresistible. But…as a noob, i know that the 2D features are improving all the time and after installing 4.3, i now have to reinstall for 4.5 which has many new features. And so i fear those recent tutorials and few books that deal with 2D are already out of date.
And so i am thinking, maybe i should continue with Stencyl 3.1 for now - which i’ve been playing with the last 2 months - and let 4.5 settle down before exploring Unity further.
I’ve even been looking at Corona SDK but it seems Unity has the total solution. Corona is great for 2D also, and has a FREE starter version. But they’re only offering the juicy bits with the paid license. Unity 4.5 FREE edition all an indie developer could ever want.
Any feedback appreciated if you’re having same issues or can offer advice
If you want to learn Unity’s 2D tools now is as good as any time to start and go through the tutorials. Nothing will change SO drastically that you need to relearn the basics again over and over. If you are starting out you will most likely also be creating small projects at a time.
So don’t worry too much about it and just start your first actual project when you feel you know enough about 2D and Unity that you can judge better which version you probably want to use.
It’s a good time to start with Unity 2D (many of the features are there already) and hopefully we are going to have a clean-cut and very polished Unity 5. In fact, it seems that UT are back on track and listening actively to their customers instead of spinning the wheel with half-baked integration of new glaring products.
Thanks 'the_motionblur.
As Unity 4.5 is hot off the press, would you advise i keep unity 4.3 while learning the present 2D tutorials? I fear i will get confused if i install 4.5 and run into UI issues if there’s any confusion
You won’t, use 4.5
4.5 doesn’t really have much in the way of new features; it’s primarily a bug-fix release.

In other words, it’s never ending. There will always be new features coming out so you might as well get started now.
Point taken @randomperson42 and sarcasm accepted.
Okay, i’ll install 4.5.
Cheers everyone!
