I’m brand new to unity and I’ve done some research on it. I’ve noticed that some people are saying version 3.4 has some bugs and issues. So should I get the more stable version 3.3 or the more up to date 3.4?
Hi there, HIHI -
I am a Unity veteran and professional, with better than 3 years experience with the engine and by professional I mean I use this software to earn a living. With that being said I will tell you that I have not yet upgraded to 3.4 at either my work office or home office. This because I am currently in the middle of 4 Unity-powered projects all using the 3.3 feature-set, and I have rigid restrictions on upgrading software mid-project. I enforce this rule strictly with my junior developers.
The reason for this is sometimes, even though these products go through rigorous test phases, some debilitating bugs do tend to sneak through. Sometimes they aren’t even bugs, but rather small tweaks and optimizations that, for any other purpose, would go unnoticed and will break some key feature of your current, and working project. I cannot stress how many times I have heard or seen this happen.
But here is the catch - Unity’s feature releases always have at least one really awesome addition. In 3.4 specifically it is the integration of Substance. So really if you aren’t upgrading right away, you are missing some of the “new hotness” - which tends to be a weight of pros and cons when you’re mid-project.
Now in your case, and any new-comer’s case in general, I would say go for the current build. These bug reports from 3.4 are mostly “my code was working in 3.3 but it breaks in 3.4” because they hastily upgrade without weighing the risks vs the benefits of some new features.
All in all, Unity handles their RC phases with the ut-most scrutiny and for all extensive purposes, their release builds are solid. If by some chance something debilitating and game-stopping squeaks by I am sure that they would immediately post a hot-fix to remedy it.
I hope this helps anyone with the same question.
Cheers

When I upgraded from 3.3 to 3.4 I was experiencing editor crashes at least once every hour, so I decided to move back to 3.3. However, there are many possible causes for this so it may not be an issue if you start a new project from scratch within the latest build.
3.4 is much better than 3.3. It doesn’t crash and runs great on my Mac.
