I was just wondering what the download size is currently for the betas so I can predict what the download size will be when it finally gets released.

if I remember correctly it’s around 300mb. when you uncomress it, it’s about 600mb.
We really can’t tell that yet as the new demo project has yet to be bundle with the installer (this will happen with the first RC).
So around double of 2.6.1 oh well, good bye internet cap when Unity does get released…
If you have such a tight cap, can’t you get it at a library?
Not here in South Africa.
But sometimes in life we must make sacrifices in life for the things we love.
I was curious, why in the world would you care. Now I know. And I feel your pain.
From what I read on the forums (mostly from Mr.Dude’s posts) living in South Africa has a lot of downsides. I was under the impression that the living standard there was a lot higher.
by the way, I checked, and the unity 3 beta 7 is 200mb. There’s no demo project.
maybe someone could mail you a CD?
how much would the overcharge be?
YO CORRUPTED…
My download cap was already breached on the 3rd
but my desire to fix the UDE forced me to download it even though I know the full version will be ready this month for sure… forcing me to download it again ![]()
The good news was that the UDE works fine (well, one static had to be turned into a private, but apart from that…), but it means I downloaded it for nothing… Still… having it is still interesting ![]()
Tell you what, I’ll download it when it gets released and send it to you on cd, yeah? Sure beats bandwidth prices, to be sure!! ![]()
Just pm me your details when you get a chance
ps. ivkoni about the downsides… +1 for our legal system and the people practicing it
Arrived in South Africa and immediately a lawyer helped his mate to steal $3000 from me, and then declare himself bankrupt.
Then another lawyer who was renting my house played with the legal system to stay in my house rent free as long as he could and ended up costing me $11 000 in rent (I was using the rent to pay the bond and without it had to pay everything out of my pocket. just his contributions totaled $11 000).
Then my (bank appointed) lawyers screwed me on the sale of my house and most of the money went to them. I ended up selling my 3 bedroom house for $80 and then had to pay them $1200 for their services…
Know the difference between a dead vulture and a dead lawyer, both laying in the road?
The skid marks in front of the vulture…
Know the difference between this forum and South Africa? I visit here multiple times daily, I never leave the house in South Africa (thus, go nowhere).
Like he said, not in RSA… but we do have internet cafe’s we can dl stuff from… I recall I once wanted to download the free SDK from Apple.com. Sized around 1.5G if I recall correctly.
The download charge would only have cost me 6 weeks wages… Fortunately, RSA has now finally got a few uncapped packages pricing between $70 for 350k to $350 for 4Mb. That is excluding the $20 to $80 respectively for broadband line rental and excluding the rental of the actual line for an additional $20. So at 350k you are looking at $110 p/m and at 4Mb you are looking at around $450 p/m.
Considering the common monthly income is only $300 p/m (my wife worked for $200 for the last 1.5 years and only then got snatched up by another place by offering her $300)… Even the uncapped options are still extortion…
And just to add insult to injury, most service providers still charge per Gb… Take Telkom, for example, they have reduced the price of their 1Gb package to now cost only the same price as Afrihost’s uncapped package… 1Gb from one place costs the same as uncapped from another place… but uncapped could cost as much as 2 months salary…
If anyone is interested in starting a company and making a fortune, just start a “I’ll download and mail it to you in South Africa” business. You could charge extortionate rates for free downloads and I think we would still pay you with a smile!
But don’t do like they do on eBay:
Apple Tv now sells for only $99.
So buy it on eBay for only $185 plus $275 shipping. We might be desperate but we are not stupid. ![]()
Since the topic came up, what’s the internet in the First World countries like? And price wise?
And Mr Dude, that just sucks ass to be honest… Damn them Lawyers.
Yikes, we have 50 down with 10 up for $100 per month. I think most people in our neighborhood have the 20/4 package for $55 per month.
Not a First World country (Actually quite 3rd world) but my 20/8 uncapped costs ~15 dollars over here.
But damn, those are insane prices in S.A.
Where I live Ontario Canada (which I think could be considered a first world nation), yet we have an internet cap, if you go over your limit you have to pay more money.
These companies have a virtual monopoly, they will partition the area and say company x gets this part of the province, company y gets this part. Leaving you with virtually no choice, which of course means no competition (meaning the users lose).
Its the same way the banks get everyone hooked on debit cards, at the beginning it was free and then when everyone was hooked on it they start charging for time its used. They got everyone used to the idea of using as much internet as you want. Then decide a to put an “arbitrary cap” (you can bet your bottom dollar they made sure to make these caps less than what average user uses so). First they make the overdraft fee low enough that no one complains, then later on they double the maximum to $50 extra.

When I was in the UK Virgin charged £15 (what? $25) for 8M uncapped. The kept upping the speed but kept the price the same so I guess when they upped it to 20M the price would have stayed the same? Haven’t checked yet cause I don’t want to add salt to my wounds ![]()
At least that is one thing I can say counts in South Africa’s favour. Here, the banks are real straight forward:
Pay when you open an account,
Pay when you deposit,
Pay when you with draw,
Pay insanely more when you with deposit inside the bank,
Pay out of your nose if you withdraw inside the bank,
Pay extra if you withdraw at another bank’s ATM,
Pay when you do a balance query
Pay when you ask for a statement
Pay a fine if you try to withdraw more than you have
Pay if your balance drops below the minimum
Pay to transfer money to another account
Pay to receive money
Pay to send money to PayPal
Pay the bank a commission each time you use PayPal
Pay a monthly fee to have your account open
Pay when you do an international transfer
Pay when you receive an international transfer
Don’t pay when you close your account
Real straight forward. ![]()
Basically, whenever you get, use or wonder about your money, it costs you do do so. My avatar reflects my experiences of online banking… He he he
Actually, I had to get a 3 month statement and they charged me $1.50… twice! So I emailed to complain and they reversed the $1.50 overcharge… then charged me $3.50 for the “service”… See the previous paragraph…
MrDude, you paint South Africa in a pretty bad light… I know most of it is true although sometimes it’s not thhhat bad but still pretty bad… Truthfully I have nothing to compare to so I can’t really tell how bad it is compared to England or America…
Compare this to:
Free to open an account,
Free to deposit
Free do withdraw
Free online banking
Free statement every month
Free first statement copy every month
Free to deposit inside
Free to withdraw outside
Free to receive money
Free to send money
Pay for international transfers
Optional - Pay a monthly account fee
If you pay the monthly fee (Mine was £5 p/m initially but over the course of 5 years it went up to £8) you get online shopping at prices cheaper than the shops and when I ordered my first PS2 game, it was already dropped through the mail slot in my front door when I woke up the next morning…
Mate, you try living inside those circumstances for 6 years then come back here and let’s see how bleak a picture you paint then
The simple truth is that I also didn’t know how bad we had it until I experienced how well others have it. We don’t know because it is all we know…
Check out azzogat… 3rd world country… Has 20Mb lines for $15 uncapped… How excited did we get in my friends circle when we realised the days of $40 p/Gb are over, only to be replaced with $110 for uncapped… Again, look at azzogat… Each time they drop an extortionate rate on us we smile like the cat that stole the milk simply because we don’t know any better…
Living overseas is a curse if you have to come back here… :x
My wife so desperately wants to go back, but unless I canstay I have no desire to go anywhere cause getting used to things over here again is just too hard…
Bought my first car cash with 1 week’s wages…
Bought my second car cash with 2 weeks wages…
Bought 3 cars in 3 years… Try to buy a second hand car over here and not have to pay for 5 years… Heck I didn’t even qualify for a car for 6 months after I got back… then the dealer lied and said I paid a deposit so I got a second hand car and a 5 year payment plan.
Used to work at Tescos, did the markdowns at night. Paid 10p (R0.70) a loaf of bread. Worked near the canned foods factory and paid between 5p and £1.20 for a can of food. Minimum wage was £5.60 p/h… Do the maths… That;s over £40 p/day… with £1.20 for 2l of milk, 10p for a loaf of bread, 5 microwave meals for £4… Did I mention you get £40 p/DAY? I was a student working 20h/week and had a XBox, Wii, PS3, 24" iMac, 15" Powerbook, over 200 console games, over 200 original DVDs, 2 fully fitted kitchens, 37" LCD, uncapped 8M broadband, rented my own place for the wife and I, went to the beach up to 3 times per week, had takeaways whenever we wanted, explored the country, even drove clean across the country from Lincolnshire to Wales and took the ferry over to Ireland for the day and then drove back again…
Got back to South Africa, got robbed at knife point, had all my money stolen by lawyers, had to go into debt to get my stuff over here, couldn’t qualify for a car, I had to rent a house that is closer to a trailer than a house and even that got broken into 2ce in 2 weeks… Got my dream job, got an insane salary and used all of it each month to pay off the debts being incurred on my behalf by that damn lawyer and paying off my other debts… went from the land of milk and honey to living in a shack and having to fight off my landlord who attacked me with a knife last week because I cornered him about the $700 deposit he is trying to steal from me by insisting I have to pay double that again…
Sorry, bru… I have nothing good to say about this place except that the banks are real straight forward…
S.A. seems like Brazil some years ago, now things is getting better, but, hell, it was worst! In 1990 banks got all the money from people savings, no matter how much you had there, there are still people that never created bank accounts again, it was terrible times, people without all the money they saved from years of work.
