Unity 3 pricing

Hi there

I bought the indie license b4 it became free. :frowning:

A few questions …

  1. will the cost of my indie lic be taken off the purchase price of Unity 3 if I decide to buy it??

  2. will Unity 3 just be a free Indie version and a paid for Pro version? Or will there be another pricing tier in there.

I use Sketchup for my level modeling and I need to use lighmaps so I am thinking of buying LightUp for Sketchup, however I thought you might offer Beast in a new pricing tier for Unity. If so I would sooner spend the money on Beast.

  1. What extra things will Unity 3 Indie have over 2.6???

thanks for your help!

You should have a lot of experience by now, then.

No. It’s discounted if you order it before 3.0 is released, though.

No other pricing tiers.

They haven’t announced that yet. Watch this topic: http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=45787

Until you know what to spend money on, I would suggest using blender for lightmaps. I usually export collada files from sketchup and import into blender, then make a lightmap and ambient map in blender, and then multiply them together in GIMP to get the final one.

thanks for your reply.

I went through the ordering process and found that I Unity 3 will still cost $1200!! Even though I spent $200 on the Indie license.

I thought it would be $1200 - $200 = $1000?

I want the easiest way possible to produce lightmaps - and Blender vs LightUp = LightUp wins hands down for ease - maybe I am wrong?

I am sorry to say but no.

With 2.6, the Indie license was replaced with the free one.
To still give the Indie customers something, all got a mail (should have got) and it was additionally announced here and I think on the page, that they have a special discount on upgrades to iphone basic and unity pro till the end of 2009.
But beyond that date (so starting Jan 1st 2010), Unity Indie no longer exists and previous indie licensees are considered to be Unity licensees too and as such are no longer entitled to an upgrade reduction

Thats at least how it was understood.
You can though always test: choose the pro upgrade and enter your current license. if you get a discount its still there. If there is no discount after entering it, above is actually valid.

You’re right; lightup would probably be easier. Still, using blender for lightmaps is very simple, at least once you get the hang of it. It also probably has a few more features than lightup when it comes to lighting a scene.

I was specifically told by UT support in 2009 that I would get the discount from my indie after the end of 2009.

This has now been taken back? I’ve contacted their sales and debating the issue. Not ready to give up on this yet.

I quote the e-mail discussion:

So you can all see what they told me, maybe others too. This isn’t good customer service. I was never informed about this not being true. I was in the knowledge that I could get the discount later too, so I didn’t order it in 2009 when my financial situation was not as good.

UT, really, get this act together, please. No more mistakes like this. I like the company and the product, but the service starts to look a bit sour.

This didn’t work, tried it.

Was there a resolution to this? I also paid for the Indie version, and would very much like to apply the $200 to the cost of the Unity Pro.

Unity Pro currently has a $300 reduction so you likely don’t want it to be applied and raise by $100 because you will not get a reduction on top of this one after you missed your chance for upgrade during the dedicated timeframe (Oct through Dec 2009 where you had $350 off from pro instead of $200) …

so decide: do you want to pay $1200 as per current preorder reduction or $1300 as per normal price - indie part …
because aside of not being entitled to it anymore, if you were, you were entitled to the $200 reduction against the normal price not an already reduced one

I appreciate the response, but that logic doesn’t quite make sense.

Unity iPhone Pro is $1500. The Pre-Order price is $1200. When my iPhone Basic upgrade is applied, the price drops to $1000. Half of the cost of iPhone Basic is applied to the Pre-Order price.

Given that, I would expect Unity Pro to also be $1000 if the $200 is applied directly towards the purchase, as I was told it would be. Perhaps there was an announcement that the $200 would be lost at some point, but I certainly was never aware of this information.

yeah but iphone basic is a valid license, iphone indie no longer is as the upgrade pricing only applied till end of 2009, not till now.

People had their chance to get $350 reduction on pro instead of only $200 (unlike those who upgraded before unity indie was phased out). Alternatively indie licensees got $300 reduction on the iphone basic addon or alike making it nub cheap, again something noone else got who upgraded before the phasing out.

Okay. I don’t recall all the price and upgrade options that were made available throughout the past months. That said, I do believe the $200 was to have been applied to the full-priced Unity Pro, not a discounted version.

I began writing my previous reply before you edited your post with “because aside of not being entitled to it anymore, if you were, you were entitled to the $200 reduction against the normal price not an already reduced one”.

If the $200 redemption program has been phased out, well, it’s disappointing. It would have been nice if they simply provided a refund instead. The individuals that purchased the Indie version and simply couldn’t afford to upgrade to the Pro version at the time basically got screwed.

for those who bought unity indie in the 60 or even 90 days before 2.6 they offered refund. those who got it before logically could not get a refund as they already “enjoyed the benefit”, none the less UT gave them “double bonus” for upgrading to pro or buying unity iphone basic …

thats licensee treatment beyond anything you will ever see anywhere else.
all others would have had a 30 period before 2.6 for which they would have offered refunds and nothing else for all other. not 60 or 90 day refund period while still offering upgrade double reduction for all who ever bought unity indie 2.x, especially not with the option to decide to do so during over 3 months (till end of 2009)

But thats kind of why UT likely offered U3 preorder since march I think: with 6 months upfront knowledge nobody can claim “to not have known of it”, aside of all those buying in that timeframe getting the old + the u3 counterpart as it becomes available (+ beta)

In the end, UT has the authority to decide on how they are going to handle your case so best write the support.
Above is my point of view basing on the things posted last year on the board in relation to the offer etc

There really isn’t much point discussing this further, but I just want to point out that I already owned Unity iPhone, so any credit towards that would have been useless. I couldn’t afford to purchase Pro at the time, because I had been unemployed for perhaps 12 months. I was using just Unity iPhone Basic, not Unity, and unless I could have purchase both Pro and iPhone Advance at the time, there really wasn’t much point in getting Pro.

Furthermore, I think you’d be hard pressed to find many companies that sell a commercial product for hundreds of dollars to customers, and then turn around and give it away for free. So this entire situation is somewhat unique. Also, a declaration that “all others” would have provided only 30 days is mere speculation.

Regardless of any end-of-year sales, discounts, or pre-orders, my understanding was that the $200 price paid towards the Indie version could be applied to a future purchase, namely Unity Pro. Since Unity Pro 3 is the only “Pro” version currently available, I assumed, perhaps mistakenly so, that I could apply the amount towards that purchase.

The duration U3 pre-orders have been made available has no bearing at all on the fact that, and you may find this hard to believe, I was not aware that the $200 redemption program had expired. The fact that I was I unaware was one of the driving reason to post to this thread in the first place. My initial query was to confirm if the program was still going on.

Finally, while I greatly appreciate your responses, it is quite frustrating to respond to posts only to discover that they were later modified with information that could have drastically changed the direction of the conversation. Two of the three posts you submitted were modified after or while replies were being composed. It is helpful to the reader when such updates are clearly marked.

Yeah I have an email from someone on the Unity staff that offered me a refund because it went free less than one week after I bought it and I responded only to be ignored and never got my money back so I will stick to the free versions from now on. Not a good business practice there so i can’t see giving them anymore money. If it had never been brought up that would be one thing and I would have been disappointed but would have shrugged it off…but being offered then denied…not a good feeling.

in that case though you should have dropped them a mail again, because its known that the support that handled these refund requests had (understandably) a pretty long queue.
Also its unhappily too common that mail filters block out even mails from unity3d.com (I’ve whitelisted the domain on my host to be on the sure side).

Did you ever consider to check back on the matter and/or check what ever payment system you used to buy indie and see if it was automatically transfered back there? (I think you are the first case I read on not getting the refund, UT is a faithful and trustworthy business and I doubt they are in need of shady tactics for $200)

@mryan: technically you can lose anything by just dropping them a mail to clarify it for sure

Hiya,

I can assure you that we do not ignore anyone who emails into our sales or support email addresses. All emails should get an automated response to say we have received and logged it, followed a few hours or a few days (depending on how busy the teams are) by a human response.

If you did not get an automated response it will mean your email has not been received. If you get an automated response but no human reply, wait a few days and then gently send a reminder by replying to the automated email.

Thanks,
Graham

The email originally sent to me (I don’t have the date but I am sure I can dig up the email) the week after U2 Indie became free. I responded and was given two option, a discount on an upgrade or a refund since I purchased just a few days before hand.

I chose the refund because I could not afford the upgrade at that time.

I responded accordingly and was told further instructions would follow.

After that I responded a few more times, got an automated response, and never got a human response.

That being said it has been quite long enough to get a response back. Months and months. I certainly do not like that response, as though I don’t know what I am talking about, an automated response is not a response…That is why it exists and is automated. It is the lack of a response in waiting for someone to get back to you.

Any way you look at it I was overlooked and had to suck it up and was voicing my experience here not griping because I had written off any hope of the refund and certainly STILL can not afford the upgrade :frowning:

I am agree with you, So many times I was deleted by mistake very needed emails. Thanks to aware about this things. I never check email of inbox, just check my friends emails and any ebay products offers.
