I hope Autodesk does’nt mess around with the Unity deal later on …
Looks like it’s helping their stock.
This looks bad to me. From my experience with Autodesk, they make everything far more complex and troublesome than what it’s worth. I read their EULA’s and tried installing 3DS Max once when I purchased a student license. Turned out they have a forced upgrade clause that they can terminate your license at any time and thus force you to purchase a new one. Needless to say I declined the EULA and returned the software. Before I read that, installing it took forever and it felt like I was installing a bloated Rhino on my hard drive. I can’t stand them. I hope they don’t ruin Beast and destroy or alter the contract with Unity. I hope I never have to use any of their products again(except for Beast in Unity that is).
I’m sure you all realize that UT already has a legal contract/license to use Beast and nothing that they change is likely to really affect that. But I’m sure folks will question otherwise ![]()
nothing? you mean aside of potentially never getting a new version of beast under the current contract
The way Unity is hitting the scene these days,
I’d think it’s only a matter of time before Autodesk seeks to buy it.
It’s too cutting edge for them not to try.
Like it or not.
I don’t like that idea, then the price would go up by a few thousand dollars and I wouldn’t be able to be a hobbyist game maker. Plus they would add a bunch of DRM software to make Unity bloated and slow.
When I saw this topic title, that’s exactly what came to my mind.
I’m even believing they already tried, several times.
Potentially but it would be a stupid idea.
I’m willing to bet that like me, a fair majority here would leave immediately just cause they hade Autodesk just as much as I do for their business practices especially with bought technology and their future.
Also hell will freeze before you see me forking $1500 on a 12 month turnaround alike base nor $3000 for unity + iphone pro
Yeah, same here, I don’t like Autodesk overall commercial policy.
Indeed. Autodesk is not very friendly unless you are a business that has a ton of cash to use their products. I personally don’t like the way 3DS Max is set up and think its interface is horrendous. I don’t understand how they remain the industry standard for having such flaws.
I used to like Beäst untill I heard this. Oh well… Let’s see how Autodesk fucks this one up ![]()
Autodesk, the future is dismal.
Well, as a Max (subscription) user I still think it’s exciting!
Maybe they will do something really cool!
Sorry, I know it doesn’t seem to be the trend here.

I don’t see Autodesk trying to buy Unity.
They are more focused on creating tools that can be used by a wide range of customers. Why would they buy a game engine? They currently make tools that are purchased by customers using a wide range of game engines.
Unity’s not a public company, so nobody can buy them out just because they want to.

I sure hope not!

I don’t think companies overpowering other companies is good.
Yeah, I am still burned by Microsoft buying Caligari, the makers of trueSpace. It’s my choice of 3D Modeling application and they purchased the company and then laid off the whole team “for economical reasons” due to the US’s current poor economic condition. They just purchased trueSpace so they would have a better in house modeling software base and it was a failed attempt at competing with Google’s sketch up as they started advertising it to go with Microsoft’s map system. They killed a great program in one feel swoop for the sole purpose of trying to compete with Google in a way no company could. Damn you M$! trueSpace was around as long 3DS Max, and was just about as powerful until they killed it.
I would much rather have paid $475 for it and still have it around than to have gotten a buggy, free, last compiled code that they released.
Not good news at all.
I just hope that Autodesk do not ever have the opportunity to take over Unity. It would be a tragedy for all the UT employees that would lose their jobs and a travesty for all the customers who would now be forced onto zero support service contracts and yearly paid for minor update schedules.
I don’t mind Autodesk acquiring one game lightmapping system.
I just don’t like it when they start collecting several applications that do the same thing. Like how they have MAX, Maya, and Softimage.
If you just get one, then it means you want to get in the market and compete.
If you try to buy up everything, then you’re doing the opposite. You’re trying to NOT compete.
Heck, I wouldn’t even have minded as much if Autodesk bought MAX, Maya, and Softimage for the purpose of taking the best parts of all three to make one awesome package. But that hasn’t happened.
