The new GUI system? It’s not released yet. The one in 4 right now is an optimized version of the same old GUI system.
There is going to be a new GUI system? What’s going to happen to the old GUI system?
Eventually.
Nothing; the editor uses it and it works fine for that.

Is the unity 3d team going to ditch the old GUI system once the new one is ready to use or are they going to keep it like they did with their old particle system?
Already answered that.

Oooh, it’s been optimized? Is it now reasonable to use?
It’s still the same GUI system that was in Unity 3.5 and the GUI system is fine. It might be a bit hard to use at first but you get the hang of it eventually.
When ?
Seriously guys first it was 3.xxx then it was 4.0 , now its someday …
When it’s done.

To give UT the credit they deserve… they know they’ve screwed the pooch on this one - they publicly said so [in the Unity 4.0 thread IIRC?]
Indeed they have.
Though I can’t help being concerned that its taken so long. General I don’t approve of releasing features before the are ‘feature complete’, but if the new GUI system is being so problematic to develop, perhaps it would be beneficial for them to release a developer preview of an alpha state, just so that it can be put through its paces and any ‘failings’ can be identified early, so that when it is eventually released, it has as near perfect as possible feature set and operation.
I guess in many ways a bit similar to how Flash developer preview was done. That barely worked for me on nearly all my projects, but that was partly the point. It must have given Unity tons of data as to what was and wasn’t working and the weird things us developers can do with code that they might not have accounted for. It certainly improved greatly the last time I looked into it.
