I’m having a hell of a time trying to get a humanoid rig Avatar setup in Unity 4’s Mecanim system. I’ve tried locating some good reference material but there really doesn’t seem to be any around. The documentation only gives 4 very general bullet point guidelines on rigging. I can rig humanoids in Max just fine. I use bones because I like the flexibility. I plan on learning biped and CAT at some point.
I’ve built fairly complex rigs with twist bones, wired parameters, controllers, IK/FK, etc. After no success getting an avatar setup in Unity I tried creating a very simple rig. I still can’t get my head around the system though. Does anyone have some good solid info on how to rig a humanoid for Unity 4 in 3ds Max using bones? I’d appreciate it.
If you use a biped it’s automatic, so I recommend just doing that.
Using the standard rigs will certainly make your life easier. Using a custom complex rig with twist bones and wired parameters is most likely possible to get working using the legacy animation system and bake animations in the import settings.
Mixamo offer you the opportunity to rigg your character free :

Try it and take a look on how they did it, if I remember well it’s a simple bones rigg !
And as Jaimi said I know that with biped it works fine !
