Studica seems to offer a student versions for Unity 4 Pro without mobile addons, as well as with Android Pro and iOS Pro. There are a lot of things that I find unclear about that and I was hoping you could help me clarify things.
Why is the version with mobile licenses only available for Mac?
In either case, what do they mean by “License is not upgradable”? What about updates? If I buy the student edition now, will I be able to update to 4.3 Pro?
The students versions are watermarked. Where is the watermark? Would a non-commercial web player release be watermarked?
If you have any experience with these deals, please do share them, I am curious but I think the description on the website is a bit vague.
Mobile is because it’s probably iOS, which can only be developed on a Mac.
Non upgradable means you cannot upgrade from a major revision ie 4.x to 5.x but you can for a minor ie 4.1 to 4.2.
Watermark on standalone builds.
I bought my Pro license from Studica, although it was the full perpetual commercial license. Meaning it’s the same license as the normal Pro version, but I can only install it on 1 computer at a time. Think it may interest you:
Hippo already answered most of the questions, but to expand on the the last one, the watermark is on standalone builds. It appears in the bottom right corner, and isn’t too intrusive. That said, you may need to contact Unity about your exact “non-commercial use,” as the educational license is for educational, non-commercial purpose use only.
Thank you for your answers! Just to clarify, standalone build does not include webplayer, right? Anyway, good to know watermark is modest looking.
Hippo, are you absolutely positive about updating? Just asking for a confirmation because not being able to upfrade to 4.3 would be really bad for obvious reasons.
Standalone covers Desktop build targets (OS X, Windows, Linux). Webplayer it’s a separate build target. Standalone and Webplayer are included in all versions of Unity (no extra license required).
Updates are as Hippo says - you can download and install all 4.x builds, but you’ll have to purchase 5.0 as a new license when it comes out (you have plenty time to enjoy 4.x before that happens).
Thank you, much appreciated! It looks like the student version for <100GBP is a really good deal to do some developing (but obviously not for publishing).
I have the student educational version. There is a watermark on any build you do. Standalone or webplayer, it is there.
And it is good for one year of purchase. And you get any update between then except for major upgrade like 4.x to 5.x.
Archania, thanks for the clarification about watermarks. What happens after one year? Will Unity stop giving you updates? Or will it stop running altogether?
Good question. I think that the pro code will no longer be valid anymore. But can tell you next march! Lol.
But it is probably just the pro code won’t work anymore and all pro functions won’t be able to be accessed.
