I downloaded Unity 5.0.1f1 x64 this morning and began installing it immediately… It has been over 10 hours and it is still installing extremely slow. I have to show the details to even show that it is installing. Also for some reason the installer is taking 0% of my CPU and only 6MB RAM…
It makes sense that it’s going super slow since it isn’t even really using any system resources, but is there any way to speed this up? I want to have Unity installed before Wednesday and at this rate I am honestly not sure if that will happen or not because it is only about half way.
I kicked off the install over an hour ago, and I was very disappointed it is taking so long. What was really depressing is I won’t get any programming time in tonight, and from what I read above, none tomorrow night either.
Then I learned WHY the install is taking so long: MICROSOFT. In particular, their stupid Visual Studio Community 2015. There is no practical reason the installation should take 15 hours. I have installed giant games that are much larger, in a tenth of the time!
I’m not trolling for angry responses from Microsoft lovers. I’m really angry that Unity decided to integrate Microsoft’s bloatware. If some people want to use VS on the side, then fine. But I hate it. IMHO, Microsoft takes a lot of space, adds a ton of complexity, and adds little benefit. Many of Microsoft’s “solutions” are only for PC and are the antithesis of what Unity is trying to do (be cross-platform etc).
