Unity 5 blendshapes dont animate normals

Im trying to animate a blossom with blendshape keys. it works, but the normals of the mesh(vertices?) arent altered. means when i close the blossom, the normals of the outside still point straight down. see these pictures of the normals view

in the shaded view this means the blossom is bright on the inside and dark on the outside when its closed and the light shines from above. is this a bug or am i doing something wrong?

i fixed it! i told unity to calculate the normals instead of importing them.
