Interesting. Full blown speedtree support for unity trees. You can buy trees from the asset store.
Or, for $495 you can buy the modeller and make your own.

I would like to know the difference between this Unity version and the āgameā version they sell on their site, hope they show it in the following week.
Sounds ok but not as exciting as I hoped. It would be better if the builtin Unity tree creator could output a SpeedTree mesh. I think this integration means the built-in trees are going to get dumped and weāll never see any of the current bugs fixed. That kind of sucks but I guess on the bright side itās one less obstacle in the way of them ripping out the whole terrain system and replacing it with something better.
The versions on their store come in several different levels of detail.
Butā¦I noticed there are TWO low poly versions. One that is about 6k polys, and one that is almost 3k. Iām guessing the 3k one is pretty low but I also would be really interested to see how this affects performance.
About nine and a half grandā¦ @ JC yeah speed tree has always been quite bad on performance, but it looks nice :).
I meant feature wise, also I hope they enable us to buy upgrades since it probably will be lacking certain features.
Does the cheapest SpeedTree program allow to make low-poly trees?
Does it work on mobile?
I find it strange that the website isnāt more detailed
They have SpeedTree for Gamesā¦but why not just offer that up like the other versions they have up in the shop
Will there be an image based lighting in the Unity version of SpeedTree? Iāts available in SpeedTree 7 for games. Would be nice to see it i Unity to match the Standard Shader IBL features.
Will the SpeedTree trees be affected by the Englighten GI, skybox lighting, reflection probes, light probes etc. ?
Enlighten needs to bake the geometry for the dynamic GI. SpeedTree trees are affected by the wind feature so they can move. That means they are not as āstaticā as standard, not dynamic meshes.
Is it possible to bake them for Enlighten in same way as other meshes so they will not only receive the bounced light (from the light probes) but reflect it too?
Thatās very interesting.
Looks very nice, but some screenshots or video of Speedtree in UNITY would be better
Have you looked at the Unite 2014 Speedtree video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPpVw57Gh9Q
Too bad there seems to be an encoding issue with the video and itās only 240p right now. Hopefully the video team will reupload this one.
Itās available in 720p for me. Google probably havenāt gotten the encode out to all their CDNs, eventual consistency and all that.
Very nice! The only things I would ask for now is a higher quality video, and some performance comparisons. Especially regarding many trees, as opposed to a few scattered around.
Everything looks great but Iām wondering about the GI and new lighting with SpeedTree. I hope it works together so SpeedTree trees would look as great as other objects that are affected by GI, probes, ambient light etc.
Can someone tell us more about this please?
Waiting for U5ā¦
Thank you for that fine video, Aurore! It was very nice.
I see that Unity will support tree rotation now, that is great
All in all, very nice improvements to the Unity tree handling system.
