Seems like the naming convention changed again, can someone from Unity clear up what the new convention means?

The main change I’m seeing is Unity 6.3 is now called the next LTS, is this what “Unity next-gen” is named now? Or is that still Unity 7 and 6.3 somehow gained LTS status, also does that mean Unity 6.3 will be supported longer than 6.4 ?

Our company mainly focuses on web based applications, We are currently using WebGPU

Question: Whats the future of WebGPU? currently there’s a lot of restrictions and limitations with it like RWBuffers in shaders, no asynchronous computing and many other texture limits.

Is unity planning on prioritizing WebGPU so that more of our products can pivot to switching to unity?

It would be nice to add a button to show package content by clicking in the Package Manager.
For example, I download an asset from the Asset Store and import it via Package Manager, but can’t fast move to the asset folder after importing.

The way i see it, is less drastic changes will be in unity 6.x that can be project breaking and easier to upgrade to, and hopefully Unity 7 will be more different.

Hi, @JiRo_Dev - here’s what we shared about versioning in our 6.1 update on the Unity Blog:

Long Term Support releases (LTS)

Unity 6.0 LTS, which released October 2024, is supported with two-year LTS, with an additional year of support for Unity Enterprise and Unity Industry users.

Unity 6.3 will be released as an LTS version later this year. Our goal is to release an LTS version annually, providing a stable foundation for your projects.

  • Recommended for: Live service games and creators who are about to lock in production on a specific version of Unity.

Update releases (Supported)

As an Update release, Unity 6.1 receives the same level of support as an LTS (including bug fixes and critical platform updates) until the next release is published. When Unity 6.2 is released, it will become the only Supported version. We aim to release multiple Update releases each year.

Being able to confidently upgrade to the latest Update means you can always keep your productions on the most current release without sacrificing stability or performance.

  • Recommended for: New and mid-cycle productions, and developers looking for the latest features and supported platforms. Update releases are fully production-ready and the preferred choice for beginning new projects, as they contain the latest features, platform support, and performance improvements.

By supporting both LTS and Update releases, our goal is to give you maximum flexibility in how you approach development and live productions.

Next Gen still applies to future Unity versions beyond 6.X.

Hi, @Kilroymyboy - we are indeed working on improvements to WebGPU. In regards to Unity 6.1, you can now use the WebGPU graphics API to include modern graphics features in your Web projects. Key features include:

  • Compute shaders
  • Indirect rendering
  • GPU skinning
  • VFX Graph

Note: WebGPU is currently experimental and not yet suitable for production usage. For more information refer to WebGPU (Experimental).

Hello @Jimmy31 - we have a couple of UI Toolkit improvements in Unity 6.1:

  • New Variables field in UI Builder: You can now create USS variables directly in UI Builder. This feature streamlines the workflow for managing styles. It lets you define and modify USS variables without switching to an external text editor. It improves efficiency, reduces context-switching, and ensures consistency in your styling. For more details, refer to Manage USS variables in UI Builder.

  • New Mask64Field UI control: You can now use the new Mask64Field control to create and edit 64-bit bitmask fields, allowing for precise bitwise flag management and streamlined data handling in your UI Toolkit workflows. For more details, refer to Mask64Field.

  • Updated UI Toolkit profiler markers: The top-level UI Toolkit profiler markers have been renamed to be more accurate and descriptive. The user manual now includes detailed descriptions of these markers and the conditions under which they appear. These improvements help developers identify bottlenecks and optimize UI Toolkit workflows. For more details, refer to UI Toolkit profiler marker.

Is there a significant update for Visual Scripting coming? (reposting until its responded)

It seems like a silent city about this… Official discord unity server is like a ghost town. Can’t find any official news on it. Lots of haters on Reddit and online about it being ignored, discarded and deprecated by unity…

So whats the official voice about it?

P.d. i absolutely love visual script. It helped me code. Since 100% words doesnt help me at all (c#).

@Litoid ,

Visual Scripting is still receiving support but there are no updates in 6.1. We’re still evaluating our longer term plans and roadmaps and cannot commit to any further information at this time.

We appreciate your patience on this.

From reading blog, the patch release schedule seems the same as the old tech stream schedule. Except that patch releases will now get all bug fixes that the LTS versions receive. I guess under the new schedule LTS’ will now also get new features instead of being a bug fixed version of the prior techStream?

Unity next-gen is almost certainly a reference to the next major version 7000 series. Yes it seems that 6.3 will be a LTS with 2 years of support.

Support? Hmm I have found a few bugs in it and im not sure where to bug report… And also feefback to make it better. So im curious if its worth the time to learn it and hope for unity to update/improve it?

There are a few different ways to submit a bug report: https://support.unity.com/hc/en-us/articles/206336985-How-do-I-submit-a-bug-report
