Unity, Amsterdam, and Immigration

Mods, feel free to close this thread for breaking the rules. However Unity itself appears to be taking a political stand, so I thought it might be appropriate to share.

In any case, bravo Unity. For a long time Unity has stood for democratizing game dev by making it available for everyone. And now it seems like the company is actually willing to put their money where their marketing slogan is.

Well done guys!

I understand that sometimes people want to just avoid talking politics and wish that the sources they rely upon for entertainment would stay politically agnostic. This is what, I think, the backlash over football players kneeling during songs was about.

The problem I have with that line of thinking these days is that the injustices being carried out are so unacceptable that to have a platform of visibility where you can do something to help steer the world back in the right direction and not using it seems similar to witnessing a crime take place and saying nothing.

I applaud any company that stands up for social justice against tyranny and oppression.

Perhaps. But one could also say paying attention to politics has been forced on the company by the current political climate. There are quite a lot of game related industries and groups that have taken to being political lately.

The US consumes a large amount of games, many of which come from international sources. And so changes to the accessibility of the US market are a big deal for game developers the world over. Locally many feel its the calm before the storm. The wrong mix of tariffs could completely destroy the Australian game industry, or at least drastically change the face of it. Even those who have no political opinion should be seriously thinking about how the markets might shift.

Game dev is also a particularly mobile industry, there are huge numbers of devs working in countries where they are not native citizens. So immigration restrictions also tend to effect the industry a lot. There are already stories of studios being torn to pieces by the executive orders on immigration. Its hard to stay neutral on politics when you have friends and colleagues threatened with deportation.

Like it or not, I’m picking you will see a lot more politics from all your favorite game dev sources over the next year or so.

Your just going to be pissing off half your audience for no reason. Its not going to help you get sales

If he even lasts a year in office. People are already trying to find ways to get him impeached. :stuck_out_tongue:

Helping their customers get to a conference they’re hosting isn’t exactly ‘no reason’. It’s also part of a protest move, which I would also say is not meaningless or pointless.

That’s probably too cynical of a viewpoint to think that companies are only capable of doing things that boost their bottom line. I believe companies are capable of good when lead by the right people, and moves like this give me confidence in the UT leadership in a general sort of way. Whether that has any tangible benefit to their business or not, I’ve no idea, less so if people opposed to the statement they’re making feel stronger about not supporting the company afterward.

I’ll second @Aiursrage2k 's opinion.

The reason why I’d prefer for companies to stay non-political is because as far as I’m aware there’s no justice, and no “right” or even “good”.

What tends to be happening all the time is that multiple people have different ideas of “justice”, think that they’re doing the right thing then their interests clash, and people get hurt in the crossfire, and every side thinks that their brand of “justice” is the right one.

If you get political its not only going to be a loss of a sale (if they disagree with you politically) but might permanently damage your brand (where someone wont ever buy a game you make again). This seems especially dumb for indie devs who have a hard time selling any units anyway. That pool of people you are trying to sell your niche game to became that much smaller.

@neginfinity I want to start off by saying that there are so many people on these forums that I deeply respect. And I can disagree with someone – even vehemently – while still respecting them. You guys spend a lot of time here sharing knowledge and helping others out, and that’s a small way we all try to make the world around us better. I can become impassioned by my beliefs and can come off a bit strong when discussing them, but know that I still have a high opinion of you and others.

With that out of the way, you’re dead wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t consider things like basic human rights to be a matter of opinion. A black man shouldn’t have to fear for his life every time he has an encounter with law enforcement. A child from the middle east shouldn’t be separated from his mother for hours with no cause. No one should ever be judged based solely on their religion or even worse, a religion that’s common in the country they originate from.

These aren’t things that are even open for discussion, as far as I’m concerned. These are absolute essentials we need to get right if we want to be able to look at ourselves in the mirror, especially if we claim to be a nation founded on freedom and liberty.

I’d rather be customer of a company that has common sense, rather than being a customer of a company that doesn’t care about social justice and other things. A reason more for me to stick with Unity for the future.

Surely Unity won’t need them and their money.

Political discussions are not allowed per the forum rules.
