I think it is very alarming to hide this tech. Unity is in the position to give out the stuff, but they want to isolate it. Maybe, because they think taht they can earn more money, which is a good argument.
But what about democratizing stuff…, this feels very sad (not the only topic)…
Unity has been doing this for a while. They isolate access to things and then charge access to the, sometimes with things they’ve bought out. See: Introducing Unity ArtEngine for AI-Assisted Artistry
Instead of adding so much stuff all around, they should better focus on core tech… They have so many man power, I do not understand why they are creation so much stuff all around… 
I don’t care about core tech nearly as much as I care about them maybe focusing on things like Unity’s ongoing UX disaster at this point.
