Edit: Hurrah! The Unity Asset Store team have removed over 130 assets from the Unity store and TurboSquid are going to be hopefully submitting better quality/usable assets from now on.
Thank you to the UAS team for listening to us. Now all we need are improved filters on the store.
Hi Everyone,
I cannot understand how TurboSquid are able to sell so many identical assets on the asset store, this cannot be a good thing for anyone other than TurboSquid and for Unity in the short term only.
As a long term TurboSquid user I am disgusted, I honestly expected better from Unity to protect the integrity of the asset store and protect their customers!
I can understand a need for very high poly models, but every single model is just dropped from the turbosquid website in to Unity with no real care or thought. The excuse is that it is a feature so that you can set up your own LODs.
Please explain how you can justify the same doors, but with the door open or closed? The same buttons but change the colour and charge the same price? The same helmets but just rotate it???
I know many artists who get rejected from the Asset Store because either the quality wasnt good enough, not documented or too many similar assets. So I do believe that there are people who check what gets allowed on the store. This time however NOPE its green light straight in.
If over 200 assets suddenly are accepted and a high number of them are duplicates, not game ready, crazy poly counts, over priced and some frankly just not very good, how can it not look like some kind of ‘special deal’?
It is not too late to take down a lot of these duplicates.
I am doing a 1 man peaceful protest of TurboSquid on the asset store. #SayNoToTurbo
Is there a handshake deal involved here, some kind of mutual advertising pact? Or is Unity just so lazy and incompetent they saw hundreds of items from the “great” TurboSquid and just hit the “approve all” button without actually noticing all the duplicate items and that most of them are a million miles from game ready? What the hey% is going on?
Selling open doors and closed door. Note that door is obviously not separate or submesh of doorframe. Also a million polys. These TurboSquid assets are hellishly expensive considering they’re far from game ready. Total rubbish. #SayNoToTurbo
I wont give the link because I don’t want to promote Google finding them, but all the Unity TurboSquid assets look like they are being sold by 1 account on the TurboSquid website.
So many randomly different models, it looks like a publisher selling lots of artists work. I just hope they really are his as I have seen other people steal & sell other artists work on TurboSquid.
Yeah even the agreement for Selling on Unity itself, has a quote i believe: (roughly) “If you have a single item at a high price, make sure it is unique or special.” something like that. Now I would not pay $10 for a door over 10,000 tris, nor would i pay $20+ for a military helmet. Clearly this was overlooked, and technically against the agreement, i believe…
I cannot tell if that was sarcasm or not.
It feels like Unity make more money from the asset store than from people buying licenses of Unity. Some people I know who make a full time living by selling on the asset store, others able to purchase houses from their asset store sales.
Some could say Unity have the easiest job in the world, making their % off asset sales.
But when you look at cases like this, are they overwhelmed with the number of people trying to sell on the store or is there something else going on?
Wait… So i am a publisher for fun? No bills to pay? This is my career, i hate to be that guy to respond so fast…
But yes, i understand that what you are saying has meaning. The thought of the creation of the store was originally to build a community and bring in new developers. A community of game devs and artist to share their passion and love for what they do. I just wish that you worded that differently. not being mean, you just caught me off guard a little…
This is the time of money (unfortunately) and we all have to have it to live. What The Messy Coder shared here, is important, because this goes against Unity agreements, in a way, and clearly shows how greed can affect you, when its mostly consumed you. The prices are outrageous, and not even close to game ready, so it just seems like a bad cash grab.
As a publisher, if it were up to me, id make all of my packs free. but with the “adult” side of life, i unfortunately have to pay bills, and must sell my work accordingly.
Totally agree, hahaha. Both you and i with our large packages on the store, can take one model sell it for $10+ and rinse and repeat. thousands of models later… haha lol
It is amazing to see the two extremes between the types of Publishers you see on the Asset Store.
In one hand people like 3DForge and AquariusMax who have packs with literally thousands of prefabs giving the community amazing support & insane value for money; compared to TurboSquid selling variations of the same models & prefabs as different assets to scam as much money from people as they can.
is it real? Is it no an early April’s Fools’s day joke? .guys, what’s going on?
are they selling the same model with different transform setting in the prefab?
that is insane …
I think it honestly is a different ‘model’ as in the took the original model, changed its position then exported it so that its classed as a different model.
Nope.
Point is that technically model is the same. They just change door position. If you note (using the package content ) the 4 textures included are the same. Note that the door is not separated by the frame …as it should be …
So in 3d modeling mesh is the same, just change the transform a door sub, but they export as unique FBX
so they are seeling a door at 24 bucks giving you the option to get for half the open or only the closed …
