hi im wondering if were allowed to use unity assets we buy from store in udk. and also since we buy the assets were allowed to use them commercially right
I’m not sure if it is allowed. But it is nice to fund future Unity versions.
I don’t know about other peoples stuff, but IIRC Unity techs stuff is only for use in Unity.
Depending on the license… But i dont see why someone selling the assets would care how a customer uses something they purchased.
im only asking about the assets that are for sale in unity. if someone who knows 100% can tell me before i start buying asset packs in the store thatll be great since i have no intention of using unity i dont want to buy the assets only to realize that i cant use it in udk
For that you really should contact a lawyer and send them the asset store license or at least contact unity directly and ask for a clear answer.
Note that some items (it’s clearly stated next to the item when you purchase) come with their own license in which case you need to understand this on a case by case basis.
The easiest way is contacting the author of the assets, he/she can impose whatever restrictions on this. If the author doesn’t impose restrictions, he/she will tell you if it’s permitted. If he/she doesn’t know, the author will ask Unity and will tell you. If you don’t believe what the autor or Unity says, then contact a lawyer as ronan says. If you don’t believe what the lawyer says then contact the consumer protection office ![]()
Not really no, unless they selected their own license, the author has no say in this, if buying from the asset store you’re buying from unity, and both you and the author are bound by the same license agreement, so the author is only able to do as good as you, “try and read the license and hope to get it right”. The correct person to ask is unity directly, or ideally a lawyer
Then the author will tell you about this binding license, and how Unity’s + the author’s license work together.
What i mean is the author didn’t write it, he knows no more than the end user about it unless he is a lawyer and qualified to fully understand it, on top of that a lot of sellers on the asset store do it as a side thing and probably haven’t even read the license agreement. So odds are the answer would be “yea you can do what you want , i don’t care”, but since the author isn’t the one licensing the asset to the end user, it doesn’t matter if he cares or not.
It’s his call but i definitely would NOT ask the author for his opinion on a license he did not write and is no more qualified than me to read, i would ask unity (who wrote it) or a lawyer. The only exception is when the author provides his own license.
In general I agree with you ronan, Unity is a reliable source of information on this regard. But the author should have freedom to add restrictions on his work too. So let’s say you should ask both at the same time, in case the author has imposed additional restrictions.
Hell no he shouldn’t! He has that opportunity when he sets the license, once he licenses it to you you’re free to use it for any purpose for which it is licensed period. If you buy an asset you buy a license to use it, he can’t change it unilaterally as he wishes so if he wants his own terms, it’s his fault for not adding his license when he pushed it to the store. That’s the whole point for me of buying from the asset store (and not buying things with a custom license) it’s that i know exactly what i can and cannot do without having to talk to a dozen people (i own over 120paid assets)
Do you mean I’m saying the author can change the license terms at any time? I didn’t say that, if so where did I say that please tell me?
I’m just saying this: ask both Unity and author to make sure you have the right information about licensing.
No, but you said he could want to add other restrictions, if he added the unity license as his choice well, he can’t, it’s that simple. It’s easy to know that, if he added his own license it says custom license next to the product, if it doesn’t say that then the author has no say.
and…
So the author can set custom restrictions with a custom license. Where am I saying anything different than you?
Follow the discussion in order, in my first post i said you should contact unity for the regular license and it was different in the case of a custom license and then we were talking about that case (the case of the default license) so in that case it made no sense to contact the author.
I think we just agree, it’s a matter of wording, i just disagree you should contact both
If license is standard => only contact unity, don’t even ask the author
If license is custom => only contact the author, don’t even ask unity
This is how i do for my licensing questions at least, as in both case the other party isn’t involved in the license discussion.
The author can’t change your agreement with Unity, but they can license you a copy of the assets under another license.
In that case you might need to download and manage the assets separately from the asset store.
Shouldnt this be answered by Unity staff? Anyone here?
I’ve been referring people to get free assets from the unity store. Heck if they install Unity maybe they’ll give it a spin when they hit a snag elsewhere…
If he intends on charging money for it, he does not have that freedom.
