Unity comparison for dreamers?

Hi, i’m thinking of buying Unity Indie (in fact i was all set to), but then i read a comment on a youtube video saying that the Indie version only lets you make first-person games. Of course Youtube is notorious for it’s hearsay and outright idiocy, but then i remembered that the video tutorial i had been watching last night only mentioned making first-person games.

So, is it possible to make, say, third person hacking/slashing zombies games, or racing games using only the indie version? Or am i better off spending £90 less on FPS creator and just making shooters that way?

Some sort of comparison list of what you can actually do with the different versions might be nice to go alongside the other comparison list. And that’s do realistically after you have just installed it, and not just “well you can do anything with hacks and workarounds!”. You can make anything with anything using “hacks and workarounds”, after all.

You can create any kind of game with Indie

Indie does not have any restrictions that would force you into specific genres or leave specific genres out.

Welcome to the forums!

That is a wildly incorrect statement, Indie is capable of so much more than that it’s silly (and the person who submitted that comment has clearly spent zero time actually looking at Unity).

Yes, it’s very much possible. Please use the search or just look around (like in Gossip) as there are a gazillion “can I make games?”, and the answer is always yes. Unity is extremely flexible and it’s really up to you to decide the game type you’d like to make. FPS? Sure. 3rd person? Sure. Driving game? You bet. Physics based roller? Yup. 2D side scroller? Got that too. And on and on…

Dive in and you’ll find lots of power and capability on tap. Have fun!

Why though? We can only tell you what tools are there, it’s up to you to imagine what you can build. We say “there’s a hammer and a screwdriver”, should we have to tell you that you can build a chair, a desk or even a home? Hopefully you can sort out your dreams! But if you want to see a cross-section of what’s out there then we have a bit of that too:

Well i built my home with cardboard and rubber bands, but i had to use some hacks and workarounds XD.

I’m now getting used to the forum and kind of regret asking silly questions, last time i trust Youtube hearsay!
