I saw this engine http://www.dxstudio.com/features.aspx a few years ago and when I started looking for a game engine and chose Unity but I was like wow this looks like err… Unity?
I never really saw much about it but the features and such look very similar and even the website seems similar.
Have you guys ever tried or heard anything about this?
It looks less updated but still at the time I found that I had unity 2.6 and things were very similar
If you really want to compare, I would say Shiva 3D is more of a direct competitor to Unity than DX Studio - both for its features, support platforms, and target audience.
Yeah I tried that one for about 2 weeks but it didn’t fit my work flow, I prefer Unity, I tried torque and UDK but I still prefer Unity as I am not a very experienced programmer, I’am an artist. I really liked the UDK workflow and the power of the engine is just too cool but Unity fits more my needs.
Features-wise on paper DX Studio looks pretty good but they’ve never really taken off and once Unity Indy went “free” that pretty much killed their user base. I’ve been following them for several years, even bought a license, but several nagging bugs that never got fixed have kept me from ever taking it seriously. The developers are great people and they do answer their emails quickly, but as Da Bawss said, the engine is not even close to Unity.
Rendering power if nowhere to compete with Unity, same goes for shaders. As it has been said this was appealing engine several years ago, just like Torque or C4, all of them were overruned by Unity and UDK.
How can you say that DX Studio is not even close to unity ? If set apart the cross platform feature of unity, what plus points does unity have as compared with dxstudio ? Since you say that you have been following them for years, then will you share what you feel is missing in dxstudio as compared to unity indie ?
How can you say, I mean what are your grounds ? On what rendering capabilities unity indie is superior than dxstudio ? Will you please share your viewpoints ? It is very important for me.
Well … I am not a dxstudio employee or something like that. I just want to know some facts before I decide on which one to learn - dxstudio or Unity - pros and cons … is that something offensive in this forum ?
Pros and cons are usually made from two things that are in more or less the same level of quallity / use. Stop wasting your time and just use Unity, no need to ask further questions.
First, the response from the community may have been a bit too strong. Tho’ I admire the tenacity and ceaseless support of our forum community, the actual posts in this case may have been a bit too strong.
On the other hand, Juggernaut3D, your first post here did not seem to indicate you were researching the difference between the two editors, but were defending DXStudio; or more accurately, it seemed as if you were accusing people on this forum for not assessing DXStudio in a favorable light. In this case, it is not surprising that this has caused a strong reaction.
If I were serious about finding out the difference between the two editors, I would have gone about it in a different manner.
Please be aware that any comparative discussion is bound to be volatile. Mac/Windows, C#/JS, StarTrek: Deep Space Nine/Babylon 5, Unity/UDK/DXStudio/Torque/etc.
Hmmm, simple math would tell you that DS9 is 4 better than B5
I’ve seen engine forums where discussion of other engines is prohibited at all, and I kind of a agree. No matter how well meaning the OP is in asking about Engine A vs Engine B, it always and inevitably devolves into a flamefest. I think the worst possible place you can ask about comparative engine features is in an engine’s forum. The answers you get are not going to be objective.
