Unity crash Unexpected_Kernel_Mode_Trap

Hello, I need help with this.

Whenever I touch the lighting pannel or import .FBX from a package this error happens. Unexpected_Kernel_Mode_Trap blue screen and windows restarts. Then, I tried uninstaling unity and it happened again, tried to install unity 5.4 happens during instalation. So, I decided to go into safe mode and managed to uninstall unity 5.3 and install 5.4, I reboot and then, trying to work on a game and unity crashes. I know that the error it’s supposed to to be a windows thing, but with no other software, be a game, PS, Zbrush or anything like that, this happens, only when working with unity. Can anyone shed some light?

My PC is a Core I7 6700k, 16gb ram, msi 980 gtx TI.

Thanks in advance.

Blue screens usually mean one of three things.

  1. Kernel failure. Bug in the OS itself can cause blue screens. Usually this affects a large group of people and either the OS vendor quickly fixes it or we identify it and work around it. It’s unlikely this is the case for you, I don’t know of any other reports of this blue screen error happening with Unity. In theory, it could be some recent OS update, have you recently updated Windows?

  2. Driver failure. Modern applications often use features that the drivers can’t handle until updated which can lead to an unrecoverable failure. Are all of your drivers updated (usually graphics drivers are the culprit)?

  3. Hardware failure. Unity could be doing something in just the right way to cause a failure on faulty hardware. Where other applications don’t hit that. Does your motherboard have an on-board graphics card that you can switch to temporarily, to see if the problem persists?

Hello Shawn, thanks for your answer.

  1. I run windows 10 pro and the updates are automatic. Can’t say if that’s the case. The thing is, I recently installed unity on this PC so I don’t have a point of comparison. I’ll try rolling back updates and see if that works.

  2. Well, I’m using the latest drivers for my components, they update almost weekly. Is there a way of checking which drivers are causing the failure? I mean, without uninstalling them one by one.

  3. I’m hoping this is not the case, but yes, I’ll change to my motherboard graphics to see if there are any changes.

Often the blue screen itself will have some hints about which driver crashed (if it was a driver). Unfortunately, not always the case.

Unfortunately whenever it happens it doesn’t say anything else… Here’s a bad picture of it.

On the other hand, uninstalled monitor and wacom drivers, algo unplugged my graphics card and nothing. And yesterday I unplugged and cleaned my ram. Don’t know what else it could be. Maybe MSI drivers?

I also tried unplugging my RAM and starting the PC with only one at a time, that didn’t work. I checked the RAM for physical errors, that didn’t work either… Same issue. If I can’t come up with a solution in a couple of hours, I think that I’ll format my drive and install windows again.

My whole setup is:

Z170A gaming pro carbon.
MSI GTX 980 Ti
Intel core i7 6700k
16gb RAM ADATA.

I don’t know if that could help.
I also found one other person with this issue on a reddit sub forum. I contacted the user to see if he found a solution.

I’m also running into the same issue with Unity 5.4.0f3, I wasn’t even able to install it on initial download and had to do it in safe mode.

My imported fbxs do not show the thumbnail of the content, instead showing the display icon of an fbx file so that means I can’t use it at all. I could only import the fbx in safe mode. I can’t show you a crash report since the unexpected kernel mode trap error always restarts my computer.

Like Artoirem this is only happening with Unity none of my other software/games are having this issue. Please let me know if you need me to provide any other information.

My only solution was to format and then reinstall everything. I didn’t install all MSI drivers and support apps, just the basics. Hope this will help.

I guess that’s the only option left to me would update after doing that.

Hi Shawn,

Last week, I tried to update and the same thing happened. Looking for fixes, I found that Iolo System Mechanic was the reason. Now, I already unistalled and it works without any issues and I informed them that their product was making my PC crash when using unity. I don’t know if you guys fix these kind of things or if it’s up to them, but it be great if I could use both softwares.

Thanks,

Same problem, I can confirm the fix related to crashing with a kernel trap message while running System Mechanic. I did not have to remove System Mechanic, I went into Active Boost and the performance monitor settings and turned every setting off including the PowerSense mode settings. I have not crashed for about an hour, I was crashing about every 5 minutes.I left the Anti virus setting alone and on and all is well for now.
