Unity crashes when I open any project on my new MacBook Pro Catalina Version 10.15.6

I am attempting to learn Unity with their 2D Game Kit. I have installed the version of unity that it needs to run, and I have deleted and redownloaded the program multiple times. I have also tried opening other practice projects.

Every time I try to open a project, my whole computer shuts down. I went to tech support and they said there is nothing wrong with the hardware on my computer (after all, it’s a completely new MacBook Pro Catalina Version 10.15.6).

The guy from tech support said that he attempted to find answers to this online and it seems many people are having this problem with the newer MacBook models. Essentially he said that there isn’t anything he can do and that I should contact Unity.

I hope someone can help me, I don’t know what else to do, and I have projects that are waiting on the backburner because I can’t even open/learn the program I need to complete them.

Also this is the crash report when my laptop turns on again:

Same here. Same new MacBook Pro Catalina, same 2D Game Kit. But I crashed at running (play) the game, not when loading the editor. The Unity version is 2020.1.3f1.

It’s already solved in my machine:

MacBook Pro 13-inch 2020, RAM 8GB, Graphics Intel Iris Plus 645 1536 MB
Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6

Steps:

  • In Unity Hub (version 2.3.2) → Learn, find 2D Game Kit, Open Project.

  • After it finished loading, close the Unity Editor to open up Keep Project dialog, save the project on a folder.

  • In Unity Hub → Projects, click the Add button to add the saved project here. After it got listed, in my case, it automatically uses the Unity version 2020.1.3f1 (as this is the latest version that is currently installed).

  • Click the three-dot menu on far right side on the project row, choose Advanced Project Settings, and add a new argument in the text box: -force-metal, and click Done.

  • After the Unity Editor opened, I follow the official Unity Tutorial steps called “2D Game Kit Walkthrough”, create a new scene (menu Kit Tools → Create New Scene). After the scene got created, click the Play button.

  • Before I put the “-force-metal” flag, my MacBook Pro always crashed and restarts by itself here, but now it is fixed. So the problem is actually already responded by the Unity team, you can read the full thread here:

NOTE: the steps above is taken from the thread.

Hope it helps!
