Unity, CryEngine, UDK or?

Should people just pick one and start making games instead of complaining and wondering why they are always Engine Hopping and not realizing that they haven’t made anything yet?

Yes, people should.

Im all for the which engine discussion, but its starting to wear a little thin since it comes up every few days.

People need to learn to use google. If they cant figure out how to do a bit of research without being spoonfed information, they should probably give up on game dev now.

I personally think dedicated comparison threads don’t belong in the forum as any meaningful discussion is ruined in a biased forum. Perhaps in the context of 'Unity should add this…" it makes sense but otherwise I think those kind of threads belong on websites such as gamedev.com. Again as mentioned, people should learn to google the many many existing threads on other websites (and dedicated websites to the topic!). I always thought people actually saw the threads on other websites but wanted to get the answer ‘they wanted’ rather than the unbiased consensus.

That is actually very good answer. Everyone who wants to get self thought in this industry has to do like really insanely a lot of googling and a lot of time those googling is applied to Unity only. Now considering that 90% of new engine forum posts are basically being explained over and over in past topics i wonder why are people so lazy to do this little search. Sure if there is like really constructive question that hasnt been answered before thats ok to ask, but honestly i am tracking forums for 2 years now and i cant say that i have seen such constructive question since first UDK vs Unity topic was posted.

CryEngine and UDK are better engines, but you pay royalties, the best web game engine free is Shiva3D and the license for other plataforms is cheap, if you are a good programmer XNA is free and have good multiplataform frameworks as Monogame, Ogre3d is powerfull and free but not easy, Torque 3d now is free but have many problems (propietary script language, performance, binary publishing and others), Unity Free is good for dark ambient games or cartoon style games, Unity pro is good for all but for indie developers is expensive.

Are you an AAA Technical Director with 20 years of experience in the business to be able to make such a wide judgement on all those engines ?

I was technical director in animation studios and make games since 1995 with c++ and pascal as a hobby, I have been trying for years almost of the game engines that exist.

Fatality

Just kidding rofl.
Well, games and animation studios are very different things. I’ve worked on both fields.

I was technical director in animation studios, I am senior programmer (now work in web development with codeigniter), but a game is a good mix of art and technique, i can make both, for me is a hobby, if you ask in AAA game studios maybe none use Unity.

Simple, Unity is friendly, UDK is more graphical, cry-engine is good for terrains.

Game engines are simple, there for the look and feel of the game, the main part of the game comes from the devs no matter what engine they use, its all about the code and models. If people are hoping engines too much is if there lazy and want it to just be handed to them thinking that the other engine is easier to use and not have to do as much of there own stuff. Watch Indie Game: The Movie, inspirational beyond all, and they use there own code and engine systemics to create there games.

Now stop posting the same question over and over, and big game companies almost always make there own game engines. If you switch game engines in the middle of a project its most likely because you dont know how to code or create models and the other one makes it look easier to do that! And Thats FINAL!!!

Ogre is not a game engine. And your statement, UDK and CE are better engines, is quite bold.
You should always choose your engine on a case-by-case basis. And there are some cases where CE and UDK are not the best choices. Especially when you intend to make a commercial release.

As a side-note, I wished UT would not allow such comparison threads anymore, because these make no sense at all. And I’m really tired to see those threads pop up almost every day.
If you’re really serious about game development, do your research (try dev master for a start) and NOT asking such stuff in an engine forum.

The thread complaining about comparison threads is also inevitably going to turn into a comparison thread.

Closing.
