Unity Developer Magazine issue 3

Hi,

I tried to contact Charles Hinshaw by sending email/pm and forum posts on various sites about status of issue 3 of UDM. Will this issue ever ship? It has been a long time waiting now…
Hope someone can clear this up and post an update on the status.

gr Jan

Hi Jan – I just came across your email today while looking for another, and I’ll email directly as well as replying here.

While dealing with some printing issues, I had updated Issue three to reflect Unity iPhone 1.5 changes and was waiting to make sure it released as scheduled before giving the printer a final nod to run it. That happened last month while in Copenhagen, and when I got back to the US I made sure that everything was in order and sent it off. Now I’m waiting to get them – it has been too long waiting, and that makes this last little bit even harder.

How about refunds? It’s been nearly a year since the last issue was published, I think it is unreasonable for you to expect us to continue to wait if we are unwilling to. How do we go about getting a refund for those issues not delivered?

Just ask. I’ve PM’d you.

… and a reply sent to you. Thanks.

Where the hell is my magazine?

I’m sure if you rudely demand it a couple more times, it will probably come faster.

Unacceptable behavior. Either post here on the forums in a professional and adult way or don’t post at all. I can understand the frustrations but Charles is making himself available for discussion, you can email him, PM him or post here (politely). Please don’t do the above again, thanks.

I’ll ignore the tone and write it off as frustration. I cross-referenced the domain in your profile with order records but it didn’t turn up anything. If you are a subscriber and ordered issues that have shipped but didn’t arrive (1 and 2), I’ll need some information about who you are in order to reship. I addressed status for upcoming issues earlier in this thread – when there is an update to share, I’m going to be pretty excited, so you won’t miss it.

As Tom suggested, You can always PM or email me if you want to discuss it directly with me.

I’d like to make a suggestion. I was in printing business for quite few years and started my own commercial magazine. What I took out of it was that printing was not viable unless you had a lot of subscribers to cover the cost (I found 100,000 is the minimum for a color magazine, or 10,000 for black&white).

Why not make the UM in PDF form only (with or without DRM) and drop the price to like $1/issue (dont think the price is low - it will help to combat piracy and attract more sales)?
You’ll make more profits, and if you want to make extra, attract some ads - a lot of companies will gladly publish it their for a reasonable price.

Certainly an option. Something to consider however is current subscriber base, which paid for what they expected was a printed magazine. In my own case I would be open to the compromise of switching to a PDF edition only if it’s not DRM’d, since I wouldn’t have subscribed to a DRM’d magazine in the first place.

Cheers,

I think print is dead, and would have preferred a PDF magazine to begin with.

(My girlfriend works in a print shop, too.)

I understand that printing has caused problems for this magazine, but I appreciate the printed copies that I have - greatly. And since I also have PDF copies of the magazine, I think Charles has done a good job providing these options to subscribers.

The nice thing about a printed magazine is that it can be read on the train/bus easily. Its not so fun feeding the PDF into my iPod and reading that.

So, when do we get #3 then? If it is updated to iPhone 1.5 and Charles back in the US and the printer got the job to do it, when is it delievered?

I recently ordered and received the 2 back issues of the magazine and was really impressed. Granted that I would love to receive the magazine in full color as it is currently, I believe that it is more important that the magazine survives and makes a profit so that valuable information can be shared.

I for one would welcome a subscription based upon a downloadable pdf and at the current price.

Just my opinion!
John

Nobody is forcing you to do so  You can read it on your computer or Kindle DX or any other reader. I like to read them on a netbook.

Uh huh… and what other devices do you suggest I buy? Will you send me the money so I can do things the way you think I should?

Otherwise perhaps a response directed at Charles would be more productive for you.

Is issue UDM issue 3 ever going to come out?

The printer had it in January 1986, but there were some ink issues. Should be ready soon.

Okay, I’m a jerk, but I don’t think it’s unwarranted.

When new releases of the software being covered come at a faster rate than individual magazine issues, it’s time to rethink things.

How can they not manage to ship an issue for a year+ and at the same time not cancel it? Strange.
