Unity Developer Magazine?

Anyone have it/subscribe to it? Is it any good?
I’ve noticed issue 3 has been “shipping soon” since some time this autumn. Seems a little unsure to put up for a subscription. Doesn’t it? :?

It’s good. Bit short but nicely presented and with interesting content. I like having something I can read away from my computer and a glossy magazine did give Unity some feel of momentum and community.

As you noticed though, there’s no knowing when the next issue will come. 3 was made available in PDF form but the hard copy has still not materialized. That being the case I certainly wouldn’t recommend paying for it at this point.

I’d hold off on the subscription. As Alric says, Issue 3 was made available in PDF eventually, but the content mostly seemed lacking and somewhat disjointed, like it had been sitting on the shelf for a while (a review of 2.6 features when everyone had been using it for about a month, for instance). The production quality and magazine layout are good, but it remains to be seen if the content and regular publishing schedule will be there.

When I learned about the magazine and had a quick look at the content, it was awesome and I immediately subscribed for the printed copy.

I had immeditate access to the pdf of issue 3, but haven’t gotten the printed copy so far, which is disappointing, because I already paid the shipping cost as well for a 1-year subscription (6 issues).

Then I read about certain problems on this forum, and currently I have my doubt that I will receive 6 issues per year. Sure there can be problems with certain things, but my feeling is that the customer should be made aware of problems, before he/she is paying for something which can’t be provided at the moment. This is not really fair.

The content looks good, but I would also wait and not subscribe anymore at this point.

I just got issue 3 in the mail. Thanks Charles!

Hey, great news!

Then I have hope for my printed copy as well. I subscribed for it back in December.

Great to hear that the printed copies are now coming. Usually, it takes a little longer for Germany (and if I remember correctly, Charles had to send me the first issue two times because the first one got lost). I hope things get going with the magazine - the first two issues were really cool and came perfectly in time but I think then things got very difficult for Charles, so issue 3 took a really long time. But I think that Charles also used the time to get the processes needed for a larger scale distribution in place.

So I’m looking forward to when things are settled and we get regular issues.

Just to confirm – Issue three did physically ship – I was waiting for confirmation that they were actually arriving before updating the web site to reflect that. This is the first “it arrived” feedback that I’ve seen.

My printed copy arrived in Germany today.

Sorry for my doubts.

I got mine today, in Spain.

It arrived in the Netherlands today as well, thanks.

Issue 3 arrived in London this morning

12 are yet to come - but I have them on PDF so am more than happy to wait

Got mine this morning too - and there was much rejoicing.

I ordered issues 1 to 3, I received issues 1 and 2 quite quickly, but I still haven’t received issue 3. My order was placed 6th April.

I’ve tried several times to email UDM sales but haven’t received any response.

I can’t even find the link on the Unity website now :frowning:

It’d be nice to see an official monthly magazine from Unity Tech.

We simply cannot get into that sort of operation right now, we have neither the bandwidth nor the expertise to handle that and we’d be much better off applying any “writing talent” to our documentation and/or tutorials, etc.

You should check out the Unity Creative magazine. First issue is out now and it contains some really nice stuff. Kudos to Thomas Pasieka for creating this kind of magazine, as it is surely something that will benefit the entire Unity community.

Was there a reason that the link to the magazine was removed or is it somewhere else now?

A combination of factors, but mostly due to the fact that there are now two magazines and we weren’t ready to add both so for now neither is listed while we sort out a proper way to offer all 3rd party publications proper attention on our site. These are 3rd party publications so they should be able to handle their marketing and promotion.

Thanks for the info Tom.

Was already worried that the magazine is completely gone and I am looking forward to the other 5 issues I paid for.
